Best easy, nutritious puree recipe ideas for weaning babies

By the time your baby's nearing 6 months old, your thoughts will turning to weaning them onto solids. And if you're thinking of starting off with purees or with a combination of purees and finger food, you'll need plenty of ideas up your blending and mashing sleeves – to make sure your baby's getting a good variety of different tastes and flavours.

Purees (cooked or uncooked fruit and vegetables blended to a soft, semi-liquid consistency) are easy starter foods for weaning babies to swallow, as the texture is so smooth.

Homemade meals for children were richer in composition than purchased food

Homemade baby food not only costs parents less than store-bought jars, but also provides babies with a more varied set of nutrients. This conclusion was made by Scottish researchers from the University of Aberdeen, who published the results of their work in the specialized journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. nine0005

Researchers examined the nutritional value and nutritional composition of 278 baby food items typically found in UK stores. Then, 408 recipes for homemade meals intended for children and presented in pediatric literature and cookbooks popular among the inhabitants of the United Kingdom were subjected to a similar analysis.

Comparison of the nutritional value of baby food

The results of the analysis showed the following. The nutritional value of homemade baby food was found to be 77% higher than similar baby food offered by supermarkets. However, at the same time, their calorie content turned out to be increased compared to the recommended normative indicators. On average, homemade meals were 51% higher in calories than needed for a healthy diet. The excess in 37% of the recipes was achieved due to the increased fat content. With the excessive use of such dishes, a child at an early age may become overweight and even develop obesity. nine0005

The calorie content of 65% of store-bought canned baby foods was within the normative range, but they were noticeably inferior to homemade food in terms of the amount and variety of healthy proteins and lipids that should be included in the diet of a small child.

The cost of ready-made and home-made products

As a rule, home-cooked meals cost parents less than buying jars of ready-made purees, vegetable and meat dishes. For comparison, the researchers looked only at jars of baby food, which are available in a regular store. Products sold with the label "organic food" are much more expensive for consumers. On average, the difference is 30-40%. Therefore, researchers recommend preparing food for the baby on their own, if parents have the opportunity, rather than buying jars of baby food in the store. However, here you need to exercise reasonable care and limit the addition of fats to dishes, if necessary, reducing their amount in the recipe. nine0005
