How many ice cubes of food to give baby

Totally confused parents feed their baby ice cubes

For first-time parents, those early newborn days can be hectic, sleep deprived and often full of funny surprises – and that state can last quite a while.

One couple’s reaction to food quantity advice is beyond hilarious. The new and tired-out parents anonymously turned to Reddit to share their misunderstanding – and we’re all still laughing!

Just following instructions

There is so much to think about when you have a baby. And when it’s time for starting solids, there’s even more going on. This couple thought they were doing the right thing by carefully following advice on what they should give their baby boy to eat, and how much.

“A few months ago when our baby was old enough to start eating food we were sent a free month-by-month baby food poster guide from [a UK baby food company]. We stuck it on the fridge and started to follow the advice. For 6 months it said ‘veggies and fruit, smooth texture, 2-3 ice cubes twice a day’.

The parents had not yet heard of freezing baby food in ice cube trays so naturally they thought the instructions referred to actual ice cubes.

“Never heard of the ice cubes thing but it was a reputable company so we just went with it and started feeding our son fruit and veg with a side of ice cubes,” they said.

While this is funny in itself, as time went on, so did the portion sizes.

“By 7 months it said ‘fruit, veg, dairy, eggs, grains and pulses, 3-4 ice cubes 3 times a day’. I thought, wow, he’s hardly eating the 3 ice cubes we’re currently giving him, he just pushes them around his high chair a bit and licks them, but whatever, we upped the ice cube portion,” they wrote.

“Why are you giving him ice cubes?”

As is often the case in these sorts of situations, it took an outside eye to spot the error. “Mother-in-law came round and said, ‘why are you giving him ice cubes? Won’t he get brain freeze?'” recalls the parent. “But we said ‘no, no, it’s a thing now, you have to give them ice cubes’.

Finally, the murky light dawned on the sleep-deprived parents. “It was only later that night, when I really thought about it, that I realised IT MEANT PORTION SIZE!! All this time in our sleep deprived stupor we have been serving our baby son ice cubes every day!”

Just too funny

The thought of the poor baby looking at the growing pile of ice cubes thinking ‘what am I supposed to do with those?’ proved too much for many Reddit readers.

“I’m absolutely rolling from ‘he’s hardly eating the 3 ice cubes we give him’,” said one. Another said, “I cracked up at the image of the kid licking and pushing the ice cubes around his high chair in confused disgust.” And finally another comment (which I can totally relate to) was “I started laughing so hard at this line I was tearing up and couldn’t keep reading.”

While it’s easy to have a giggle, we’ve all made mistakes as new parents. Especially when trying to do all the right things for our precious new family member. This couple however had the humour to post their mistake for all to read – and provide no end of laughter and joy during a time in the world where there has not always been a lot to laugh about.

Sleep-deprived parents mistakenly feed baby ice cubes for months

Emma's Diary | 5th July 2021

They’d misunderstood a baby food guide that they say used ice cubes for serving sizes

A frazzled parent has confessed to feeding their baby ice cubes for months after misunderstanding the instructions on a baby food poster guide they had been sent.

Taking to Reddit the anonymous parent explained: “For 6 months it said “veggies and fruit, smooth texture, 2-3 ice cubes twice a day”.

“Never heard of the ice cubes thing but it was a reputable company so we just went with it and started feeding our son fruit and veg with a side of ice cubes.

“By 7 months it said “fruit, veg, dairy, eggs, grains and pulses, 3-4 ice cubes 3 times a day”.

“I thought, wow, he’s hardly eating the 3 ice cubes we’re currently giving him, he just pushes them around his high chair a bit and licks them, but whatever, we upped the ice cube portion.”

They added that their mother-in-law questioned why they were giving the baby ice cubes and said it might give him brain freeze.

“But we said “no, no, it’s a thing now, you have to give them ice cubes”, the poster continued.

Then realisation dawned.

“It was only later that night, when I really thought about it, that I realised IT MEANT PORTION SIZE!!” they wrote.

“All this time in our sleep deprived stupor we have been serving our baby son ice cubes every day!”

The post drew plenty of comments and interpretations of the situation

The post drew lots of comments, with one person saying: “I'm absolutely rolling from "he's hardly eating the 3 ice cubes we give him”.

Another added: “I cracked up at the image of the kid licking and pushing the ice cubes around his high chair in confused disgust.”

Many wondered why portion sizes would be expressed in terms of ice cubes in the first place.

One person said: “Honestly, I probably would’ve translated it as veggies, fruit, ice cubes, blended as a smoothie. Lol”

And another suggested: “You prob missed the part where they said to freeze the baby food in ice cube trays.”

Plenty agreed with that, with one person adding: “This is what it means! Cook and puree the food, freeze it in ice cube trays, take them out as you need them and warm them up for eating.”

Another user added a note of caution, writing: “Oof. It could’ve not been harmless. That’s a choking hazard. They don’t always melt fast enough to be gone before death occurs, especially in babies, if it winds up lodged in the throat (and it will stick to flesh as well if it is cold enough).”

The poster had an ice cube to illustrate how much food to give them, like peas for one ice cube, carrots for two ice cubes, but in their sleepless state they read it wrong.

They thought they should give their child two or three ice cubes a day and only realized their mistake when they tried to increase the amount as the child grew.

Child

Sharing a story on Reddit, one parent said: "For six months he said, 'Vegetables and fruits, smooth texture, two to three ice cubes twice a day. I had never heard of ice cubes, but they were a reputable company, so we just listened and started feeding our son fruits and vegetables with a piece of ice cubes. By seven months, it was said: "fruits, vegetables, dairy products, eggs, grains and legumes, three to four ice cubes three times a day. " I thought, wow, he hardly eats the three ice cubes that we give him now, he just pushes them a little around his high chair and licks them, but whatever it is, we increased the portion of the ice cube. The mother-in-law came up and asked: "Why are you giving him ice cubes? Will his brain freeze?"

In addition, the parents talked about the moment when they thought that they were doing something wrong.

"It wasn't until later that night when I really thought about it that I realized it meant portion size. All this time, in our sleepless stupor, we served our little son ice cubes every day."

As previously reported by the Ukrainian portal, the couple claims that they were together in 1500.

4 exciting activities for a hot day.

Experiments and games for children with ice

Children love to play with sand and water, and in the heat you can add ice experiments to them. Here are a few activities that Asya Vanyakina, an enthusiastic mother and a well-known blogger, came up with for her son and described in the book "Iceberg on the Carpet".

The first time I froze small ice cubes for Axis was when he was not yet a year and a half old. We put ready-made pieces of ice in a cup of water, and Osya tried to grab the slippery pieces of ice, and they jumped out of his hands and scattered around the room. At that moment, I realized that now I would have to remember to freeze the water in the evening.

How often in the evenings, when I didn’t feel like playing at all, and Osya was still full of energy and ideas “what to do at night”, we were saved by ice cubes and blocks of ice with toys frozen in them, forgotten in the refrigerator. What could be easier than spending five minutes, while we are already busy in the kitchen, and putting water in the freezer - different colors, in different shapes, with different small toys that are always lying under our feet. And then someday get some ice and say joyfully: "Look what we have!".

Ice dig

Invite the child to rescue his toys from a large block of ice. For this game, first pick up suitable items - small cars, parts of different designers, animal figures, and then freeze them in a large form.

You will need:

  • large bowl
  • small children's toys
  • boiled water
  • toy retrieval tools - baby hammer, spoon and whatever the child can think of

You will have to freeze ice for this game in several stages.

  1. Place the figurines on the bottom, fill the bowl about a third with water.
  2. When the water freezes, lay out the new toys and fill them with cold boiled water again. So the figures will be distributed in layers, and not accumulate at the bottom.
  3. At the last stage, you can add water in such a way that parts of the figures remain above the water. So the children will immediately understand the meaning of the game. My son likes it when the water does not freeze completely in the upper level, then the game with the block turns out to be more dynamic - the upper level of ice breaks faster, and it is easy for the child to release the first figures.
  4. When the ice is cold enough, place the bowl of ice under cold water. Flip it over and the ice will slide out easily.
  5. Put the block on the tray or in the basin and you can start playing.

Ice games: 6 tips
To make the ice transparent, you need to freeze boiled water at room temperature.
It is better not to freeze anything in glassware, it will certainly burst.
The refrigerator can go bad if you freeze too much ice at once.
Before giving children to play with ice, rinse it with cold water so that it does not freeze to the fingers.
Some children may not like having their hands wet and cold. Prepare a towel in advance so that you can warm and dry your hands. And put a bowl of warm water next to it. And children may like to just chew on ice.
As with any other games, and especially with ice games, preparation for the game can take longer than the game itself. But it's worth it.

Dinosaur eggs

You can play with ice by freezing, for example, dinosaurs inside balloons. You will get ice eggs with dinosaurs inside. You can play with ice eggs, how dinosaurs hatch in our time, how they get along with modern animals. You can swim with them in the bath and watch how the balls of ice quickly melt.

You will need:

  • some ordinary balloons
  • small dinosaur figurines
  • water
  1. Stretch the narrow end of the balloon as far as it will go so that the dinosaur can get inside the balloon. Carefully place the figurine there. Some dinosaurs will easily fit inside the balloon, and some may have too long necks or tails. Do not try to force them into the balloon, rather start pouring water carefully, and then the balloon will stretch.
  2. Gently pull the balloon over the water faucet and hold it firmly with your fingers so that it does not fall off.
  3. Now carefully turn on the water with a thin stream and watch how the ball begins to grow in front of your eyes. It is better to additionally support the ball from below so that it does not break. Do not pour too much water, especially if you want to freeze "dinosaur eggs" in the freezer and not outside in winter.
  4. Turn off the water, carefully remove the balloon from the faucet and tie it in a knot. Now you need to place the ball in the freezer, after placing it on a plate or tray.
  5. To freeze whole eggs, leave them in the freezer overnight.
  1. The next day, remove the frozen balls from the refrigerator and remove the shell. You can start playing: defrost the ice under warm water, hit it with a hammer, sprinkle salt, just leave it to melt in the sun - any method will do.
  2. To keep the waiting fun, prepare with your child a place where the dinosaurs will live after hatching.
  3. When the dinosaurs hatch, you can send them to the prehistoric world, let them do the usual dinosaur business.

Ice Sleigh Slide

Try freezing some ice cubes along with little Lego animals or people.

You will need:

  • ice mold
  • small figurines of animals or people
  • water
  1. First, freeze a small amount of water in an ice cube tray.
  2. When ice forms there, place the figurine on it, add water and return the mold to the freezer.
  3. When everything is ready, you can arrange a competition, whose figure will slide down the hill the fastest. Before the start of the game, pour cold water over the cubes to make them smooth, and you can start the competition.

In our case, an unnecessary polished board served as a slide. You shouldn’t make the hill steep, on the contrary, it’s more interesting to compete on a flat one - the figures will slow down, and then suddenly go faster and faster, so it’s impossible to predict the outcome of the race.

Ice Flotilla

An ice flotilla can be great fun. The main thing is to freeze a lot of boats at once, because they melt so quickly!

You will need:

  • ice mold
  • small piece of cardboard
  • toothpicks
  • foil
  • basin or large bowl
  • figurines of fish and other marine life
  • water
  1. First you need to freeze ice cubes with small sticks or toothpicks, which will later become masts. In order for all the toothpicks to freeze strictly vertically and fit for the role of ship masts, I first trace the ice mold on a small cardboard, and then stick the toothpicks into the cardboard, approximately falling into the center of each cell. Of course, sticking sharp toothpicks into cardboard is easier than, for example, matches or small sticks. Now you need to turn the cardboard over with toothpicks down and place it over the form so that each toothpick falls into its own cell. Put this whole structure in the freezer. When the water freezes, you can easily remove the cardboard and the toothpicks will remain in the ice.
  2. Now attach small sails and you can launch ice boats in a basin or tub. I usually make foil sails, they don't get wet in the water, and they don't need to be specially glued to toothpicks. For flag sails, cut small strips of foil 1.5 cm wide and 3–4 cm long. At one end of the strip, you can cut a triangular or any other curly flag, and wind the other end around a toothpick several times. If it's summer outside, then you can make sails from different leaves or flower petals.
  1. The game of boats will not last long - 10-15 minutes. You can blow on the sails and see which boat will sail faster or sink first. You can play an attack on a giant crab fleet - or any other marine animal that you can find at home. And if you want, arrange a sea battle, and at the same time a competition for accuracy: aim and throw coins or small pebbles at the boats.
