I cannot count the times I gave baby puffs to my kids as an easy snack on the go or while I was preparing meals. Baby puffs not only represent a light snack but a fabulous entertaining for the little ones, almost better than play dough 🙂
Yes, you can find very good baby puffs at the grocery store, but the homemade ones are so easy to make and you can really control every single ingredient and choose the flavor following your baby’s taste.
Today I would like to share a new baby puff recipe: mango and spinach with rice cereals. Done and, as you can see from the images, totally approved by my two lovely testers, Darien and Nolan. They are the cutest, aren’t they?
The procedure is super simple and easy as always.
In a food processor or tall container if using an immersion blender as I did place all the ingredients starting from the mango (yes, you can use frozen one), baby rice cereals, baby spinach, baking powder, egg yolk, coconut oil.
Puree everything to obtain a smooth consistency
Line a baking sheet with some parchment paper and create small dots of mango/spinach mix with a teaspoon. Not too big or the puffs will not bake in the center. Small dots, 1/2 inch max.
Keep going up until you will use all the mango/spinach mix.
Bake the puffs in preheated oven to 375F for 15 minutes, than reduce the heat to 250F and bake for additional 55 minutes.
The baking phase is the tricky one and the one I receive more comments about. The whole idea is to dehydrate the puffs so that they will get crispy inside and melt in the baby’s mouth. In order to do that we are cooking the inside at the beginning (15min to 375F) and than we are dehydrating them at a low temperature (250F). Every oven is different so I would check them halfway. If you see that they are turning too browinsh, turn the heat down to the minimum allowed by your oven and bake them for longer.
Store them on the countertop in an air tight container with some paper towel inside that will absorb any moist. You want the puffs to stay crispy for as long as possible.

Easy to prepare homemade baby puffs with rice cereals, GF
- 1/2 cup rice cereal
- 1/2 cup fresh mango in pieces
- 1/2 cup baby spinach leaves
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 Tbsp coconut oil
- 1 egg yolk

Place all the ingredients in a food processor or tall container if using an immersion blender

Puree everything to obtain a smooth cream

Create small dots of 1/2 inch max on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper

Bake to 375F for 15min. Reduce the heat to 250F and keep baking for additional 55min.

This Mango + Kale Baby Food Puree is going to knock your baby’s socks off – that is if they haven’t already pulled them off themselves already!! This puree has it all – super sweet mango, healthy superstar kale and a pinch of tummy yummy ginger that will leave your baby happy and healthy! Great 6+ months – stage 2 baby food.

We are leaving later this week to go on a little summer vacation down to Georgia to stay with hubby’s parents for a week. Summer in Georgia sounds HOT to me!!! But they have a pool, so I was sold!!
Yeah, I am that annoying person holding up security because I HAVE to take my homemade baby food pouches on the plane with me, well that and 4 bento boxes worth of snacks… gawww!
Every time I now go on a plane with my kids (let’s be real, anytime I leave the house and drive more then 3 miles) I am loaded down with a toooonnnnnnn of healthy snacks, reusable puree pouches and of course some hidden bribing snacks <——- usually these are the packaged and not so healthy but when I see a tantrum coming, those get pulled out at the speed of light.
So knowing we have a 3 hour plane ride and a 2 hour car ride to my pool-cation, I knew I had to make and bring this puree in for reinforcements. While not being the most photogenic puree out there, it is full of yumminess on the inside. Sweet, creamy and tasting like a treat, this puree is going to be my go-to snack for my little ladies this trip, which I am sure will be dulled out and devoured before we even take off.
How to Make this PureeLet’s get cooking shall we…
- Prep: peel, deseed and chop mango. Peel, core and chop pear. Destem kale.
- Steam: First the mango, kale and pear get a quick steam to loosen up all their goodness. We want to bring out the mango’s amazing tropical flavor and to dull down the kale’s earthy tones. As good as kale is for the kiddos, I am assuming your little one is similar to mine and doesn’t go around gnawing on a piece <——- that would be way to wishful thinking on our part. So we do a quick steam so it loses some of it’s intensity while not losing too much of it’s nutritional value.
- Transfer: add all of the ingredients into a blender and add in some freshly zested ginger.
- Puree: blend in the blender for 1-2 minutes or until smooth.
- Serve, Store or Freeze: serve to baby or pour this puree into air-tight containers for the fridge, reusable food pouches or freezer trays.
- Mixed with Greek yogurt and a pinch of chia seeds for an amazing breakfast or snack puree!
- Stir in an ounce or two of salmon puree for a baby superfood meal.
- Combine with a big spoonful of chicken puree and cooked brown rice along with a good shake of mild curry powder for a Thai inspired baby dinner.
- Combine equal parts puree and whipped coconut milk for a baby (and mommy) dessert.

- 2 mangos or 2-3 cups frozen mango
- 2 pears, cored and roughly chopped
- 1/2-1 cup packed kale (see notes)
- 1/2 tsp fresh ginger, minced
- 1/2 water reserved from steamer, breast milk or formula
Peel, pit and chop mango. Core and chop pears. Devein and chop kale.
In a medium saucepan, bring roughly 2 inches of water to a boil over medium heat. Place the mango, pears and kale in a steamer basket over boiling water, cover, and cook for 8 minutes. Reserve steamer water. Let cool slightly.
Place mango, pear, kale, ginger and water into a blender or food processor and puree for 1-2 minutes or until smooth, adding additional water in 1/4 cup increments is needed.
Notes on Kale: I used a cup of kale, but if your little one is just starting out on kale or doesn’t like ‘green’ foods, you can go with 1/2 cup kale and the color of the puree will be only slightly darker yellow.

Yield: 20 ounces
Storage: Fridge – store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Freezer – can be frozen for up to 4 months (this and this are my favorite freezer storage containers).

How to Make My Favorite Mango Spinach Smoothie
Smoothies are not rocket science (and shouldn't be), and this one is no exception. Grab a blender and let's start rocking.
I used frozen and fresh mangoes in this recipe and they are both delicious. There is absolutely no difference in taste or texture, so feel free to use. I used fresh here because I had a lot of ripe mangoes in my chicken coop last week and I couldn't resist them. A large mango will yield about one cup of fruit. Cut it up and add it to the blender.
Top the mango with a sliced banana, a tablespoon of honey and a glass of yogurt. I recently became a Siggy convert and OMG I'm in love. Their triple chocolate cream yogurt is rich, decadent and downright amazing. For my spinach and mango smoothie, I use unsweetened. But be yourself: use what you love and have, but keep it in the vanilla/clear flavor zone.
Then add about a cup of ice - you can add a little less if you're using frozen mango or if you prefer the texture on the thinner side. And then top everything off with as much spinach as you can put in your blender. Seriously, go crazy for green. I have a reasonably stable supply of ripe leafy spinach from my CSA and I can get around three cups there. Baby spinach or a combination of spinach and kale also works.
Sidebar: I recently bought a new blender because the lid on my trusty ninja broke. WOMP-WOMP. To my absolute surprise, I didn't replace my ninja and switched to this Auster instead. I really only use my blender for green smoothies and I didn't feel the need to break the bank. The price for Oster is super right and his smoothies are really amazing. No scraping. There were no large chunks of spinach left. Just a smooth and creamy green drink. If you're looking for a blender, I'll do it with a $50 investment with two very enthusiastic fingers.
