How can Piccolo pouches have a long shelf life + keep their nutritional value?
To create healthy, safe, tasty and long-shelf-life baby food, our process helps maintain as many of the nutrients as possible:
1. Carefully balance our recipes to be sufficiently naturally acidic to be hostile for bugs but safe for babies’ tiny tummies.
2. Pasteurise the fruit + veg to kill any existing or dormant bugs.
3. Fill the pouches hot, to ensure the pouches themselves are free from bugs.
DOES THE PICCOLO RANGE INCLUDE ANY ALLERGENS?
We highlight any allergens in the product in bold in the ingredients box on the back of our packs.
Underneath the ingredients box we state any ‘may contains’ information for products which do not contain the allergen ingredients but are made in a factory that handles it. None of our products contain nuts, and our recipes are made in a nut free environment.
HOW LONG CAN YOU STORE AN OPEN POUCH OF PICCOLO?
Once opened, Piccolo pouches should be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours.
The cap should be replaced and securely screwed on before refrigerating
WHY IS PICCOLO ORGANIC?
Cat and the team strongly believe in the benefits of organic food; both for our health, and the impact it has on our environment.
Organic farming doesn’t use pesticides or herbicides and often means spaces are set aside for wildlife to flourish. We support organic farming because we recognise the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced.
WHY DO PICCOLO RECOMMEND THEIR FOODS FROM 4 MONTHS?
We follow guidelines set by the WHO, as well as the UK Government, which say when to introduce complementary food alongside breast or formula milk*.
These recommendations come from extensive research on infant nutrition and child development. However, not all babies develop at the same rate, and some parents may feel their babies are ready to wean earlier than 6 months. Our recipes are safe to introduce from 4 months**, but we’d recommend speaking to a health professional beforehand.

**The cherry and yoghurt with oats product contains oats, which may contain gluten, it is not recommended to introduce gluten until 6 months.
POUCHES VERSUS HOME COOKING?
We know that (while is isn’t easy) complementary feeding is a great way to begin introducing our babies to different tastes, textures and flavours of new foods. But how do you manage to fit this in when life gets busy?
At Piccolo, we believe in responsive feeding, and that home cooking and trying a variety of tastes and textures in the form of finger food and purees is all part of the experience of weaning. We also know from spending time with parents, that for those times when you are out and about, convenience matters. That’s why we want to make sure you can grab delicious, safe and organic alternatives that have no added extras. At Piccolo, we also follow a Mediterranean approach to eating, and want to offer a variety of flavours to babies, that parents would want to eat as much themselves, as give their baby.
WHAT IS PICCOLO’S VIEW ON SUGAR?
We never add any refined or added sugar in any form to our pouches, snacks, complete meals, sauces or pastas.
All our products contain 100% natural ingredients, with nothing extra added. The sugars present in our pouches are naturally occurring and come from the organic fruit and vegetables we use.
We work closely with universities and nutritionists to ensure we are always working with the latest research and guidelines on baby food, and make sure all our products are in line with the Baby Food Regulations.
The health and wellbeing of babies is core to what we do, and we strive to ensure our foods contain nothing extra, while tasting as good as possible.
WHAT MAKES PICCOLO DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BABY FOOD BRANDS?
We know how hard weaning can be. We think finding the right balance of foods and flavours is a pretty fun way to encourage adventurous eating.
The Mediterranean approach to food and lifestyle is at the heart of what we do, and what sets us apart from other baby food brands. Our recipes include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, pulses and grains, some good fats and dairy, and occasionally meat or fish and a pinch of a herb or spice, which we’ve found helps babies experience new flavours on their weaning adventure.
As well as supporting parents and producing tasty and healthy baby food using quality ingredients from farmers we trust, we’re committed to giving back by donating 10% of profits to charities which help local families. The health and wellbeing of babies is core to what we do, and we strive to ensure our foods contain nothing extra, and taste as good as possible.
Where do the piccolo ingredients come from?
Having worked with local and international organic farmers, our Founder Cat is passionate about knowing where our ingredients come from.
We believe in supporting organic suppliers and, in turn, the environment. We strive to keep the travel miles of our ingredients to a minimum, and are in close contact with all of our farmers. However, to source some of our ingredients, such as organic bananas and vanilla bean, we have to travel a little farther afield.
Are your products recyclable?
Sustainability is really important to us here at Casa Piccolo.
We use pouches for our baby food as they ensure our organic ingredients stay at their freshest (and so keep our Mediterranean inspired recipes tasting delicious). Using pouches also means we have a far lower carbon footprint than other packaging options, which is really important to us. Our colourful Piccolo pouch lids are recyclable wherever you recycle your plastics, but because the pouches themselves are made from a special mix of materials, it is trickier to recycle them widely. We are looking in to different options and ways to make recycling them easier – and will of course let you know as soon as we have an update. Also our Piccolo Pots, and their cardboard outer sleeves, are fully recyclable.
Piccolo are the first baby food brand to launch bio-based packaging
We are the first baby food to launch bio-based packaging across Piccolo Pure and Multipack pouch ranges. These new packs offer you a lower carbon alternative, made from 85% bio based material. Visit here for more details.
What is Piccolo’s stance on salt?
We never add salt to any of our pouches, snacks, complete meals, sauces or pastas.
The health and wellbeing of babies is core to what we do, and we strive to ensure our foods contain nothing extra, while tasting as good as possible.
DO PICCOLO PRODUCTS CONTAIN PALM OIL?
At Piccolo, we are proud to say that we use absolutely no palm oil in any of our products.

AD| My Little Piccolo isn’t a brand I have used before creating this blog post. Honestly, because we followed Baby Led Weaning I’ve not ever given Leo baby food. The only things he had was the prune pouches when he was constipated (this can happen when they start weaning but doesn’t anymore) and a few of the snacks that we take on the go. Crispy Tiddlers have saved my life so many times when he’s on the verge of meltdown in the middle of Tesco!
But in terms of ‘baby food’ he’s never actually had baby food jars or baby rice or things like that. We just give him what we eat, cut it up in the appropriate way. This is quite easy as it means we don’t have to make him anything separate and he gets to explore different things.
I recently did a cooking challenge with My Little Piccolo and they sent Leo lots of goodies to try!
They sent me the full cooking range, along with a chopping board, Nuby bamboo bowl & spoon, an apron for both Leo and me, plus a chef’s hat for Leo (which he just pulls off instantly).
The My Little Piccolo cooking range contains what I would class as ‘store cupboard food’ rather than your traditional baby food. They do sell formula, pouches and snacks also.
About Little Piccolo
Little Piccolo began with their founder, Catherine Gazzoli. When her daughter was born, she wanted to create wholesome and sustainable foods for kids. The food is all sustainable, organic (free from GMO, pesticides and herbicides) and locally sourced from independent family farms.
Here’s what I got:
My Little Piccolo Cooking Range
- Pumpkin & cheese sauce
- Chicken stock cubes
- Little butterflies baby pasta
- Organic tomato & basil risotto
- Vegetable stock cubes
- Tomato and mascarpone sauce
- Organic pea Piccolo risotto
- Bolonase sauce
- Classic pasta sauce
- Tricolore shells baby pasta
My cook-off recipe.
I always want to get creative with meals for Leo but time is usually something that stops me. But I made this super tasty, super quick and super fun meal for Leo for my cook-off recipe!
Ingredients:
Piccolo baby pasta
A wrap
1 plum tomato
Pepper slice
Slice of cucumber
2 blueberries
Piccolo stir in pumpkin and cheese sauce
Method:
1 Put the pasta on boil
2 Cut the wrap to size and cut two ‘ears’ out
3 Cut the slice of cucumber in half for ‘eyes’
4 Put 2 blueberries on for the pupils
5 Cut the tomato in half and place for the nose
6 Cut the pepper to make a mouth
7 Drain the pasta
8 Stir in the sauce
9 Spoon the sauce around the wrap for the mane
I made more pasta than I needed to so just ate the rest for my dinner while Leo eat his.
Leo’s thoughts
Well, it’s hard to know what he’s thinking, my life would be so much easier if I did know!
He did eat a bit of the pasta and pasta sauce, but not a lot. In typical Leo style, he went for the blueberries first.
He’s always a bit hit and miss with pasta, so that doesn’t surprise me. Sometimes he eats loads and other times he hardly touches it. I continue to offer it, without forcing him to eat it. He usually has fusilli pasta.
If I’m perfectly honest, I would not buy the Piccolo organic baby pasta for him again. He’s 15 months now and can cope with fusilli just fine. I may have been introduced him to the baby pasta when he was younger as I was very nervous about him choking. But babies can handle normal pasta!
I like the sauces the most. As I said, Leo eats what we eat so there’s no need to make separate meals for him. But these would come in handy if we are having some that are spicy as we could easily use the stir in sauces for him instead of giving him the hot and spicy sauce.
It would also be good if I need to quickly feed him when I’m not eating or we need something quick. There are times when his nap time is a bit out of whack and I need to feed him dinner later than usual. I just want to give him something quick and easy as we will be having our evening meal a couple of hours later. In cases like this, it’s very quick to boil some pasta and put the sauce on top.
I would have loved the stock cubes when first started weaning, too. They are really low in salt which is great! Now he’s over one, I’m a bit less conscious about his salt intake. Before I was quite strict with it. We will still use these stock cubes though!
Final thoughts
The pros of this food range are it’s quick and easy to make. It’s organic and sustainable food. It’s good for a quick meal.
The cons are that it doesn’t really fit into the Baby Led Weaning plan of just feeding a baby the same as what you eat. Though it’s better than jars and pouches in my opinion (the solid food encourages them to move food around their mouth, chew and swallow). It could get quite expensive if you were buying your baby food like this all of the time when they can just have what the rest of the family eat. It also means you have to cook different meals. I guess it depends on your personal preferences!
They do have some great My Little Piccolo recipes on their website!
Piccolo baby food is handy to have in the cupboard just in case, but not essential.
