This quick Salmon and Orange Baby Food Puree is full of brain boosting omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and a ton of vitamins! Salmon puree is a near perfect food for baby at any age.

The first time Ellie ate salmon, she was roughly 10 months old and we were out to dinner. I was happily eating my way through a salmon fish taco (accompanied by a margarita, of course) when she reached across the table and tried to steel a piece from me. Little food thief!

I (reluctantly;) took a piece out, smashed it up, mixed it into the sweet potato + thyme puree she was eating at the time, sat back and watched to see what her expression would be.

Nothing.

Except a ton of lip smacks and the frantic sign for MORE FOOD – which were the only two signs she ever learned, go figure.

Don’t let salmon’s salty, dense flavors steer you in the wrong direction by not adding it to your baby’s puree repertoire! Baby’s tend to love fish served in a puree combo and as a first finger food. It’s when they get older the challenge of adding fish to a toddlers diet starts to get harder (as does everything in life).

So start now! When they are young.

Because eating salmon (and any fish really) is sosososooooooo worth it!

If there was such a thing as a perfect food, salmon would be it! Salmon and avocados – the perfect duo!

Benefits of Salmon for Baby

Full of brain boosting omega-3 fatty acids, protein, amino acids, vitamin D and a ton of different vitamin B’s, salmon is know for it’s powers of developing the eyes and brain during early childhood. Salmon also helps reduce heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes, some mental disorders and helps improve lipid patterns and vessel function <———- boiled down, all of this means is that salmon is one amazing food for your little one!

How to make Salmon Puree for Baby

This quick recipe is a simple one – we bake salmon + orange for 10 minutes to just cook it through, toss it into the blender with a little rosemary and then pureed until creamy. I find that the orange and rosemary really balance out the salmon flavor and are easy flavors to mix in with any other puree.

But before we get up on it, let me just say that as much as I love salmon, feeding pure salmon puree to your little one can sometimes be an intense flavor for their tastebuds. So don’t be afraid of mixing it into another puree for a super duper full of goodness ultra perfect combo!!

  • 1 6-oz salmon fillet skin removed
  • 2 slices orange
  • 1/4 tsp fresh rosemary finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup water broth, formula or breast milk
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Lay the salmon on baking sheet and layer orange slices on top.

  • Bake in oven for 10-15 minutes or until cooked all the way through. Let cool slightly.

  • Transfer salmon to blender or food processor. Squeeze any remaining orange juice into blender and discard. Add in rosemary and liquid and puree on high for 1-2 minutes or until completely smooth, adding additional liquid in 1/4 cup increments if needed.

Age: 4 months and up

Yield: roughly 8 ounces

Storage: Fridge – store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 days. Freezer – can be frozen for up to 3 months (this and this are my favorite freezer storage containers). I recommend if storing in freezer you only fill your storage containers half way full of the salmon puree, so you can defrost small quantities when needed.

Baby food - fish with vegetable puree: 2 recipes. Recipe for vegetable puree with fish for children

The introduction of complementary foods to children in France is akin to the art of haute cuisine, it is not in vain that famous chefs such as Alain Ducasse develop their recipes for baby first courses. In his book of children's recipes, you can find both simple purees and complex dishes that, being dietary, will also appeal to other family members. Today we have chosen two fish recipes.

Hake with grapefruit and green peas (from 10 months)

A similar dish can be made with carrot or pumpkin puree. These vegetables, like peas, have a sweet taste and also neutralize grapefruit acid.

    1. Mash green peas. Shell 200 g fresh green peas. Peel ¼ of a medium-sized onion and chop. Steam vegetables with 1 sprig of garden savory. Remove the savory, process the vegetables in a blender into a smooth puree. Add 5 g of butter to the finished puree. Keep puree warm. nine0014
    2. Grapefruit puree. Pulp ½ grapefruit. Divide into slices, carefully removing all films. Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a saucepan over low heat. Put ½ or 3/4 (depending on your child's appetite) of a grapefruit wedge into the pot. Cook over very low heat, stirring regularly, until the mixture has the consistency of marmalade. Mash with a fork and evaporate the juice completely.
    3. Preparation of hake. nine0013 Carefully remove all bones from 20 g hake fillets. Steam fish for 5 minutes, then crumble.
    4. Final stage. Place green pea puree on a plate. Make a well in it and put grapefruit puree in it. Add hake on top.

If your baby doesn't like sour, soften the taste of grapefruit by adding a few drops of agave syrup to the puree. But don't sweeten it too much! The child must be taught to sour.

Salmon with semolina and mashed potatoes (from 12 months)

Although you want a small piece of salmon fillet, it should be as thick as possible. Otherwise, when frying, the fish will become too dry, which will spoil its taste.

    1. Mashed potatoes. Prepare or defrost 150g mashed potatoes with any vegetables and parsley.
    2. Cooking salmon. Completely remove the bones from 30 g salmon fillets. Lightly salt. Sprinkle 15 g of fine semolina in an even layer on the bottom of the plate. Place the salmon fillet and press down so that the grits stick tightly. Shake off excess cereal. Bread the fillet on one side only. Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a frying pan. Place the fish fillets in the pan, breaded side down, and fry for 1-2 minutes, just until the breading is lightly browned. Turn the fish over and cook for 2-3 minutes on the other side. Remove the fish from the pan. nine0014
    3. Final stage. Add 1 teaspoon of sour cream to mashed potatoes. Pour the puree into a bowl. Cut the fish fillet into small pieces, put on mashed potatoes and give to the child.

It's a good idea to add a little fresh chopped parsley to the puree - it will provide the baby with an extra portion of vitamins.

Fish puree for children up to one year old, the best recipes for cooking at home

Fish is a product rich in proteins, fatty acids and other elements necessary for the proper development of babies up to a year old. nine0005

Fish products are of particular importance for the nervous system, brain activity, vision, cardiovascular system, both for children and adults.

That is why fish puree should have a special place in the baby's diet.

Which one is better to use for making puree for children?

Fish is a rather difficult product to digest, so you should start with species such as tilapia or cod - they do not have a too strong smell, and are also very soft in taste and texture. nine0005

Sea bass and halibut can also be included in this category. After getting acquainted with these options, you can offer the child more familiar to us salmon, tuna and hake.

In general, when choosing fish for mashing, you should adhere to the following rules:

    • low fat content;
    • lack of small stones;
    • for kids it is better to choose sea fish, at an older age you can use river fish;
    • Use only fresh or chilled fillets. nine0014

The types of fish listed above are quite expensive, among the more affordable options for mashing you can use pollock

    or haddock.

    Recipes

The basic rule when preparing baby food: the composition of the dish should include only those products that the baby is already familiar with.

For the first test, it is better to use a one-component food, which is prepared from only one type of fish, and then mix it with vegetables or other types of fish fillets. nine0005

    Fish puree recipes:

    1. Universal recipe: take about 100 g of sea fish fillet and one teaspoon of vegetable oil (if it does not cause allergic reactions). The fillet should be boiled for 20-25 minutes, then drained and cooled. After removing the bones and cartilage, grind the fish with a blender. Mix the mashed potatoes with butter (you can add a little salt), then bring the mashed potatoes to a boil and remove from heat.
    2. Fish puree with leek and carrots. Cut the peeled fish fillet, onion and carrot into small pieces and boil until soft, preferably in one container. After that, grind all the ingredients in a blender until a homogeneous consistency. You can add a little olive oil to the resulting mixture. nine0014
    3. Fish and potato pudding (suitable for children who have tried both fish and mashed potatoes). You will need 100 g of fish fillet and half a large potato, 2 teaspoons of butter and milk. Boil the fish in the same way as in the first recipe. At the same time, boil the peeled potatoes. Mash potatoes with a wooden pestle and mix with milk. Finely chop the fish, mix with potatoes and butter. If the child has insufficiently developed chewing functions, you can grind the mixture with a blender. After that, the potato-fish mass should be boiled for about half an hour in a water bath. nine0014

Important: To try out a new type of fish, first mash according to the universal recipe and only then experiment with other ingredients.

    Recommendations

The main recommendations for the introduction of fish puree into the baby's diet are as follows:

    • the system is ready for the processing of marine products. nine0014
    • Before introducing the fish directly, it is possible to test for allergic reactions by adding fish broth to vegetable soups or purees.
    • The first sample of fish puree must be no more than half a teaspoon.
    • Fish puree is a kind of analogue of meat puree, so it is better to give only one of these dishes in one day.

Important: The maximum shelf life of homemade puree in the refrigerator is no longer than a day.

    Pros and cons

    Benefits of fish puree:

    • A lot of useful properties: increased attention and concentration, strengthened immunity, reduced hyperactivity, improved sleep, etc.
    • Fish proteins are quite easy to digest, even better than meat proteins.
    • Marine fish is a source of iodine, which is important for the thyroid gland.

Along with the advantages, there are also disadvantages, in particular:

    • Fish is a highly allergenic product, so its consumption is often postponed until a later date. It is better for children with allergies not to even offer this product until they reach the age of one. nine0014
    • It is believed that river fish absorb salts of heavy metals found in fresh water, so such products are not the best option for baby food.
    • Good fish must be chosen: shiny scales, bulging eyes, clean gills - all these are indicators of the freshness of the product. However, the probability of making a mistake is still high, so first you need to try the dish yourself, and only then offer it to the child.

Important: In order to exclude the possibility of poisoning, pay attention to ready-made fish purees of industrial production - in most cases they are safe and natural. nine0005

In conclusion, we can say that fish products are both a necessary and quite difficult product for a child's body, which should be introduced into the baby's diet with extreme caution. If you doubt the ability to choose the right seafood, it is better to turn to ready-made purees, the range of which is extremely wide today.
