Finding the Right Children's Furniture for You
When you’re shopping for antique, new and vintage children’s furniture, you’ll want your choices to fit nicely within the decor scheme of the rest of your home. But you’ll also want to create an alluring and inspirational space for your children to feel relaxed and encouraged creatively. Indeed, a child’s room can be simultaneously stylish and playful — the ideal environment for children.
Understandably, beds were the first piece of furniture designed for young children. In Ancient Egypt, children’s beds were scaled-down versions of adult beds. They were intended to be a logical size for a child and low enough to the ground so that they could climb in by themselves.
Historians discovered early high chairs in Ancient Greece. In the 6th century B.C., a child’s training potty might have also been used as a high chair, while archaeologists on a dig discovered a terracotta high chair in a marketplace in Athens. By the Renaissance period, children’s bookshelves were popular with upper-class families who had disposable income and the desire to beautify all areas of the home. The original purpose was to organize school books, but shelves eventually became integral to children’s rooms of the era.
In the early 20th century, Italian physician Maria Montessori changed the way designers thought about children’s furniture. She wrote that it was important for children to have a safe environment of their own that they could easily navigate. Montessori believed that children’s furniture should be sized for them but that it should also be made of light, durable materials so that it’s easy for them to carry if needed.
Today’s widely known mid-century modern furniture designers took interest in the idea that young children should have well-crafted furniture of their own. You can find vintage mid-century modern children’s furniture created by the likes of Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames and Alvar Aalto. Contemporary industrial designer and architect Philippe Starck is also known for having introduced versions of his furniture that were geared toward children, especially his seating and storage solutions.
It’s never too early for good design. Decorating a child’s room offers the opportunity to combine elevated furnishings and a youthful spirit and can result in spaces that are at once elegant and whimsical. On 1stDibs, find design ideas for children’s rooms as well as a variety of new, antique and vintage children’s furniture today.

What was the name of a high chair in some regions of Russia?
What was the name of a high chair in some regions of Russia? 8 letters, Field of miracles, Third round - the answer. Today is Friday 29 October 2021. The television game capital show Field of Miracles is already on the air of Channel One. In the TV show studio, to the applause of viewers, Leonid Arkadyevich Yakubovich invites a trio of players.
During the game, players take turns spinning the drum. Points are dropped on it, which the player can get if he calls the correct letter. And at the very end, the winner of the final part of the program is offered to play the Super Game. The Sprint Answer website has already published a general article with a text review of the game Field of Miracles for today, which can be found in the TV game section. The topic of today's game is furniture in Rus'.
Here is the task for the third round. What was the name of the high chair in some regions of Russia? (8-letter word)
Children's chairs, like children's clothes, repeated the style and fashion of a particular era in everything, were a small copy of "adult" chairs, and it is quite possible to imagine the history of chairs as furniture from them. Only the chairs for very young children were special, but also very beautiful.

After the last two letters "KA" were guessed, the dance group "Rhythm" entered the stage. What was the name of the highchair in the old days? Four letters have already been guessed. Then the "Prize" sector fell out. There was a vacuum cleaner in the Black Box, it would be better if the woman took the money. How to make a high chair out of wood so that the child does not fall out of it? Here's what the word looks like at the moment: "*U*L**KA". At this stage, the game stalled, the players could not guess the next letter until the first letter “D” fell out. After all, the Plus sector fell out.
Previously, in some regions of Russia, there was a special highchair for children. In it, a caring mother seated a baby who was just starting to sit and crawl. Before sitting down to work at the loom, the woman put a chair (hollow) next to it, put the child there, gave him a toy - a rattle, and calmly set to work. A massive "hollow house" kept the restless baby in place, allowing the woman to do household chores.
To prevent the child from getting bored and crying, a chair was often placed next to a bench, on which various toys were laid out: birch bark and wooden rattles, spinning dolls. The production of such a chair is a simple matter. The tree trunk was sawn into pieces and a hole was hollowed out in a wooden chock (not by chance, “gyrk” means “hollow” in the Udmurt language).
The chair is a hollow cylinder without a bottom. Inside, in the lower part, a crossbar for sitting in the form of a thick rectangular bar is inserted into the grooves in the walls. The chair was common in the countryside among Russians and Udmurts.
Answer: Duplyanka (8 letters).
Previously, in some regions of Russia, a highchair was called "Duplyanka". This is the correct answer to the question of the third round in today's edition of the game Field of Miracles, according to the Sprint-Answer website.
Items from the past
Once we were talking about some exhibits from the Tangsky house. But the fund of the Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of Transbaikalia is not limited to these items, so today you will learn about other treasures of the family of the Upper Udinsk doctor.
Porcelain tureen
An elegant porcelain tureen belonged to Ekaterina Tanskaya, the wife of the famous doctor. The oval-shaped tureen is a white porcelain bowl with handles. On the body, on both sides, a floral ornament is depicted, consisting of pink and yellow flowers with green leaves. Below the orange stroke, you can see a vegetal ornament of flowers.
By the way, the tureen came into use at the end of the 17th century in France. Refined Frenchmen carefully approached the process of eating, so their dinner looked like a solemn ceremony. Previously, in the homes of wealthy people, the kitchen was far from the dining room, so the servants covered the dishes with metal caps so that the food did not cool down. This problem was solved with the help of a tureen. It could be carried without fear of getting burned, while the dish remained hot.
The tureen emphasized the reputation of a rich house and was only part of the dining sets used to serve the table. Soups or stews were usually served in tureens. During meals, the soup bowl stood majestically in the middle of the dinner table on a tray.
Over the centuries soup tureens have changed their shape and material. Some were round, rectangular, oval, or oddly shaped like animals. They made tureens from faience, porcelain, silver, decorated with floral ornaments and fantasy scenes. For example, in Russia, Catherine II ordered a silver tureen in the form of a warship to the table - this gesture symbolized imperial ambitions. In the 20th century in Russia, the status of a tureen was preserved, but pots gradually replaced it. Now, in order not to take up space on the table, soup is poured from the pot into portioned plates and brought to each guest.
Mikhail Tansky's barometer
An interesting device hangs in the Tanskys' office - an aneroid barometer, which belonged to Mikhail Vladimirovich Tansky. This item was created in the late 19th - early 20th century in Germany.
Barometer is designed to measure atmospheric pressure. The device has a round dial under glass, similar to a watch, as well as a wooden round case with a long handle at the top. The dial has divisions with circular inscriptions: “storm, rain, changeable, clear, cold weather, dry”. In the center of the dial there is an open aperture with black and golden yellow hands. The lower end of the arrow rod is connected to an arcuate gear mechanism that moves the arrow. The round body of the barometer is made of dark brown lacquered wood with a sharp pommel at the bottom. A rectangular metal plate with a thin glass thermometer is nailed to the front side of the handle. On it you can see the inscription "thermometer" and divisions from 10 to 40 degrees, printed on a metal plate.
Scientists have never stopped trying to learn how to predict the weather. They wanted to be able to determine weather forecasts for the next period of time. The first inventor who proposed the idea of creating a special device was Galileo. However, the barometer was made only in 1643. This was done by the famous students of Galileo Vincenzo Viviani and Evangelisto Torricelli. The only disadvantage of the barometer was considered to be that it had a high probability of mercury leakage. So scientists kept trying.
In the 17th century, the German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz proposed the idea of creating a device without mercury, but he failed to bring his idea to life. In 1847, French engineer Lucien Vidy built the first aneroid barometer.

Children's high chair
In the dining room of the Tanskis' house there is a wooden children's high chair painted with black oil paint. The legs of the chair taper slightly upwards. The seat for the child is closed on three sides, the front part is open. On the armrests there are carved plant details.
Presumably, the first highchairs for children appeared in the middle of the 17th century. They were chairs with a removable partition and were designed to hold the child in place. In the period from 1780 to 1850, designs were popular where the high chair turned into a separate table with a chair. A little later, chairs appeared, which, in addition to the main task, served as weights and a simulator for physical exercises.
The first such model was invented in 1856 by Edward J. Emmons. He built a spring into the seat of the chair, and the child sitting on it could grab the handles on both sides and jump up and down. Also in such a chair, the inventor built a mechanism with weights. Even later, mobile chairs appeared on metal wheels with a tray - a tray that could be adjusted. Under the seat was a mechanism controlled by two handles. He transformed the chair into a rocking chair.
Siphon for carbonated water
Also in the exposition of the museum there is a siphon for carbonating liquids of foreign production. Its body consists of thick glass in the form of two spherical flasks enclosed in a metal mesh.
Carbonated water siphons were popular throughout Europe and were sold as an elegant and useful item in the living room, dining room or bar. In Russia, before the revolution, bottled water was considered a "master's" drink. In the time of the kings, every self-respecting shop or trading house had a large glass siphon for visitors. Such ancient devices can be seen in family photographs of wealthy families, merchants and officials of pre-revolutionary Russia.
Making homemade carbonated drinks was not only family fun, but also an obligatory holiday ritual. When creating cocktails, syrups, jams and alcoholic beverages were used. Soviet mechanical plants and industrial complexes produced metal and glass siphons, as well as canisters of edible carbon dioxide, which could be used and then taken to the hardware store in exchange for new ones. The cost of a box with ten cans was 1 ruble 30 kopecks, and used cans were accepted at 8 kopecks apiece.
In the 1990s, after the collapse of the USSR, the production of siphons and cans was closed, the products disappeared from store shelves, and the culture of homemade soda was forgotten. In the West, siphons remained an indispensable kitchen tool for making homemade soda. Despite the popularity and availability of industrial carbonated drinks, the siphon industry in the West is still developing at a rapid pace.
Tabletop bust of Leo Tolstoy
In Mikhail Tansky's office, on a shelf by the window, there is a small tabletop bust of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. The bust is placed on a low pedestal and represents the torso of the writer. On the pallet you can see the inscription "Tolstoy" in Russian and English.
Bust is a sculptural representation of the upper part of a human figure in the bust or waist section. As a rule, the bust is considered a portrait image, designed to capture the individual features of a particular person. Various materials are used to make the bust: marble, bronze, wood, wax, plaster, metal, etc. Such small table sculptures decorated a desktop, a shelf with books, a fireplace or a chest of drawers. They did not take up much space, looked good and attracted attention. Having interesting sculptures in the arsenal, it was possible to dilute the interior, make it more comfortable and demonstrate the taste of the owner.
As you know, Mikhail Tansky collected a library, and his wife Ekaterina Tanskaya was a teacher of Russian language and literature. Therefore, it is not surprising that in their house there was a table bust of Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy. The Tansky library stores domestic and foreign literature, among the many books there is a complete collection of Tolstoy's works, consisting of 24 volumes. These hardback books are covered in black calico. The book spine is made of dark brown embossed leather. This publication was published by the printing house of the partnership of I.
