Learn About Chicken and Turkey for Baby Food & Make Some Tasty Recipes

When can I introduce Chicken or Turkey to my baby?

As mentioned above, most pediatricians in the United States recommend that chicken and turkey, and other meats and proteins be introduced to a baby when he is between 8-10 months of age. This recommendation is changing however. In many European countries and the UK and Canada, national health services and many pediatricians recommend meats as one of baby’s first foods due to the level of heme iron in meats. The premise is that offering your baby’s meats earlier rather than later helps him maintain proper levels of iron and ensures adequate levels of zinc and protein too.

The Goodness of Chicken & Turkey for Baby Food

Chicken is high in protein and iron. It is one of the most easily digested of the meats you will feed to your baby. Chicken is most often recommended to be baby’s first meat. Turkey, like Chicken, is high in protein and iron. Turkey also makes a great first meat for baby.

Chicken and Turkey are amazing sources of protein. If you’re looking for lots of Iron, use the dark meat.

How to select and store Chicken and Turkey for baby food

The light meat of both turkey and chicken, such as the breast, is considered higher in protein and

lower in fat. The darker meat of chicken and turkey, such as thighs and legs, is higher in iron and higher in fat. It might be a good idea to offer your baby the darker meat of either turkey or chicken. The fat content makes this meat easy to puree into a relatively smooth texture; the higher iron makes this portion of the turkey and chicken an excellent choice.

The best way to cook Turkey and Chicken for Baby Food

A yummy way to make chicken and turkey is to boil pieces in a scant amount of water with added veggies and a dash of spice such as basil or garlic powder. I always recommend cooking any food by baking it. Baking helps retain the most nutrients with steaming being another method to retain nutrients.

Using a crock pot to cook and stew meats is another great way to cook turkey or chicken. Keep in mind that nutrients will leach into the liquid that you add to the crock pot so try to make use of the liquid by adding it back into baby’s food whenever possible.

If your baby is not used to the taste of chicken or turkey, using the juice/liquid from the crock pot may make the flavor too strong. Strain the liquid if need be and use water to make a turkey or chicken puree instead.

Poach:

Step 1: To poach chicken, it is easiest to first cut the chicken into dices – use boneless chicken.

Step 2: Add water or broth to a sauce pan – enough to cover the meat.

Step 3: Bring the contents of the saucepan to a boil and then turn heat down to simmer.

Step 4: Simmer for approximately 15-20 minutes. Meat will turn white and juices will run clear.

Bake/Roast:

Step 1: To bake chicken, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2: Lightly grease a baking sheet with olive oil

Step 3: Add chicken to baking sheet, lightly season if desired and if your baby has had spices – no salt!

Sometimes I rub the chicken with a bit of olive oil and then season it – mostly if I am cooking skinless breasts.

Step 4: Place baking sheet in the oven and bake until the juices run clear – baking times will vary depending on the size of the chicken portions you are cooking.

A general rule is that you should cook meat for 20 minutes per pound.

Chicken breasts may bake in 25 minutes while legs or thighs may take a shorter time.

Crockpot:

Chicken Pieces – You may braise the chicken prior to adding it to the crockpot if you wish. This is not really necessary and if you are pressed for time, you may just skip it.

Step 1: Add chicken to the crockpot and cover in liquid – broth, water or a combination of the two. Using a bit of apple juice is nice as well.

Step 2: Turn crockpot to low and simmer for 4-6 hours.

Whole Chicken – Wash the chicken with cool water then transfer the chicken to your crockpot. If you like, stuff the chicken with a halved lemon or orange.

Step 1: Set crockpot on low and simmer for 8 hour or longer. Be sure to check the chicken and look for the juices to run clear.

FREEZING TIMES FOR HOMEMADE MEAT PURÉES & BABY FOOD CUBES

Baby Food Cubes May Be Safely Kept in the Freezer for 3 Months. It is preferable, but not an absolute must, to use the cubes within 1 month however.

Meats are more unstable when frozen so it is best to use Meat Purées as soon as possible.

Meats are now being recommended as a first food (but not THE first food) due to the bio-available levels of heme iron, zinc and protein.

Cooking & Puréeing Meats for Baby

Cooking Meats for Baby:

Baking meats for baby food is my preferred method and retains the most nutrients. You can boil/poach or use a crock-pot but *be aware that when any food sits in water or its own juices, nutrients leach into the liquid. If you do not use the liquid, the nutrients along with the liquid will get tossed out down the drain.

Puréeing Meats for Baby: (most tried and true method for the least amount of “grittiness”)

  1. Make sure the cooked meat is COLD and is in no bigger than 1-2 inch chunks when you puree.
  2. Grind up the meat first until it is almost like a clumpy powder.
  3. Add water, formula, or breast milk or the natural cooking juices as the liquid and continue to puree.
  4. Add fruits and veggies if you wish

How to choose a tasty and healthy chicken for a child?

A child's diet is very different from that of an adult. Children have a much higher need for natural products, which are the key to normal growth and development. That is why we try to choose products for our child that meet the highest quality standards.

Selection criteria. Exceptional freshness, vitamins and nutrients, the absence of preservatives, flavor enhancers and GMOs - this is what you should pay attention to when choosing products for the children's table. If we talk about proteins, then most of them in the child's diet should be of animal origin. The most important source of animal protein is meat. In the case of children, it is important that it is low-fat so that the child's digestive system can handle it without problems. The best option is chicken meat. Quality chicken meat.

Differences between ordinary chicken and "children's" chicken. Residents of Kirov have long been familiar with Akashevo products. But not everyone knows yet that the poultry farm produces a special line of products for "Children". What are its fundamental differences?

  • The state has developed a special GOST for poultry meat for baby food. It is in accordance with it that the specialists of the Akashevskaya poultry farm select chickens for the children's table. This product has a special shelf life. Chicken "Children" is stored for no more than 5 days, while the shelf life of a standard chicken is 7-10 days.
  • In order to make the bird most suitable for baby food, all internal organs are removed from the carcass. In addition, it is completely bled to eliminate the risk of multiplication of all kinds of microbes. All internal fat is also removed from the “Children” carcass: this way the meat becomes even more dietary, which means that its use will not cause an upset of the baby’s digestive system.
  • Chicken carcass "Children" from "Akashevo" has no scratches, tears and abrasions. Each bird for this line is selected with special care so that mothers can not only delight their baby with delicious dishes, but also be sure of the safety and benefits of the product.

We choose and cook correctly. Now let's talk about how to choose and cook healthy chicken for children's meals.

  • Buy chilled chicken. The fact is that during freezing and thawing (especially repeated), most of the nutrients disappear, and it is important for us to preserve all the useful things that chicken meat gives!
  • Before cooking, the skin must be removed from the chicken: remember, our children do not need extra fat.
  • Regardless of the integrity of the package, the chicken must be thoroughly rinsed before cooking.
  • If you want to make a delicious broth, put the chicken in cold water. If your goal is tasty, soft and juicy meat, the chicken is dipped in boiling water.
  • After boiling and during the cooking process, you need to constantly remove the foam. So the broth will be not only tasty, but also transparent.
  • Boil the chicken for at least 40-45 minutes.

With care for the customer. Despite their young age, many babies are already ready to express their preferences: some prefer legs, others like wings, thighs or breasts. In the Akashevo children's line, chicken parts are produced: breast, fillet, leg, thigh, drumstick and wings. Thus, you save your time: you no longer need to butcher a whole chicken. You can immediately choose what your baby loves and be sure of the quality and benefits of this product!

Ask for products of the "Children" line in Kirov stores.

Benefits of chicken

The main benefit of chicken meat lies in the animal protein it contains, which means a lot for our health. In addition , chicken meat contains a lot of phosphorus and potassium compared to other meats , .

Chicken contains vitamin B6, which is why it is good for the heart, as well as a lot of protein and glutamine, which are stimulants of the central nervous system and strengthen the body. Chicken meat also contains the vitamin niacin, a drug for nerve cells. This vitamin supports the activity of the heart, regulates cholesterol levels and is involved in the production of gastric juice.

Chicken breast has always been considered a dietary product. It contains a large amount of protein and other nutrients, great for children, as well as those with gout, polyarthritis, diabetes or peptic ulcers.

The meat of young chickens is most useful, as it is the most tender and rich in vitamins and minerals. Chicken broth is an excellent remedy for colds.

The amino acid tryptophan contained in chicken also has a positive effect on children. Transforming into serotonin, it has a calming, relaxing effect on the baby's body.

However, all the benefits of chicken meat are manifested exclusively in domestic chickens.

Contraindications for use

Chicken contains histamine, so some, especially sensitive people, may develop an allergic reaction to chicken meat.

The main disadvantage of chicken meat is the skin containing a lot of adipose tissue. That is why, in order to minimize the harm of chicken meat, it is better to remove the skin before eating. The exception is the wings: the skin on them is not greasy, so they are recommended for dietary nutrition.

Chicken meat that has undergone poor heat treatment can be a breeding ground for the reproduction of salmonella and can cause a dangerous disease of the gastrointestinal tract in humans - salmonellosis.

Chicken meat in children's diet

Chicken can be introduced into the child's diet from 8-9 months, but only after the child's body has well accepted the introduction of less allergenic meats (rabbit and turkey). Chicken meat is given to the child according to the general rules for the introduction of complementary foods, starting with ¼ teaspoon.

At 9 months, the child can be offered meatballs, and at the age of one year - steam cutlets. Meat broths are not used in the nutrition of children of the first year of life - they contain substances boiled out from meat and can negatively affect the children's body.

Preparation and consistency

You need to buy chicken chilled. The fact is that when defrosting, most of the nutrients from the chicken are washed off along with the juice.

For baby food, chicken can be boiled or cooked in a double boiler, and when cooking, the chicken must be placed in hot water. You need to cook the chicken for at least 40-45 minutes.

The skin must be removed from the chicken before cooking.

It is better for a child to cook chicken breast. Chicken breast meat is 3 times less fat than other parts of the chicken, and the calorie content between breast and leg is almost the same.
