Roly-poly sandwiches - perfect for Baby Led Weaning

Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Great for a quick snack, lunch or tea for babies, toddlers, kids and grown-ups too. Easy to make, nutritious and fun to eat. We LOVE roly-poly sandwiches!

When it was time for my daughter Kipper to start eating solid food, we took the decision to avoid ‘special’ baby foods, and instead to give her, well, food.

We knew she was ready to start eating solids because she grabbed some broccoli from my plate and started chomping on it. For her first dessert, she had a chunk of mango from our fruit salad. Juicy!

No puree!

I never pureed a thing. Whatever she ate came in its usual format – vegetables were cut up, steamed, boiled or fried. Pasta came the way pasta does, with sauce on it, but never amalgamated into a single pasta/sauce mush.

She was able to smell, feel, see and taste how different foods behaved, both in isolation, and together. Years later she is still an adventurous eater, always willing to try something new, and form her own opinion of it.

A comprehensive diet

With the obvious caveats for things like salt, honey and whole nuts, nothing was off the menu.

When Kipper was 6 or 7 months old, she was given a lump of steak at a barbecue (she and DH are carnivores). She gummed on it for about 20 minutes, until it was reduced to a soggy pink rag. Onlookers’ jaws dropped in amazement. All I could think was, “well, that’s her iron intake sorted for a while…”

Offering a wide range of different foods provides plenty of different vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. If a child is eating a good balanced diet, there should be no need to ‘top up’ with vitamin supplements.

Texture and flavour

As well as experiencing different textures – crunchy, soft, crumbly, crispy, gooey etc – giving Kipper a normal range of food also provided plenty of opportunity to try different flavours.

The only time I ever tried to fob her off with something bland was when I made a curry, and prepared her a dish of the same vegetables but without the spicy sauce. She was about 8 months old at the time, and she took one look at our plates and realised she was getting something different. And she was having none of it.

Needless to say, she ended up eating vegetable curry and rice just like her Dad and me!

Adventurous eater

Regular readers of this blog will know that Kipper now eats EVERYTHING!

Her favourite foods include aubergine, anchovies, pesto, smoked salmon, strawberries, 70% dark chocolate, garlic and olives. Although not necessarily in that order.

Baby-led weaning – a huge time-saver!

Of course the ‘baby-led weaning

‘ approach also has the significant advantage that you don’t have to make 2 different meals – one for the adults and one for the kid/s – every night for the foreseeable future. I’ve never really understood how you make the transition from kiddie food to adult food in the ‘traditional weaning’ scenario.

With baby-led weaning, the baby/child just eats the same as everyone else at the table, within reason. I reduced the amount of salt I cook with, but then, I never used much salt anyway. We haven’t missed it.

The top tip I got when Kipper was small was to buy a crinkle cutter

– use it for slicing fruits and veggies and it puts a convenient baby-sized finger grip on their food. Genius!

Roly-poly Sandwiches

Anyway, I will now share with you a ‘recipe’ for Roly-Poly Sandwiches, which have been a firm favourite with Kipper ever since she reached across the table for that first bit of broccoli.

Over time, the slices have grown with Kipper’s appetite – both in size and number! Come September, when she starts pre-school and I have to start making packed lunches, I think she’ll be eating these even more often.

You can eat roly-poly sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, tea, supper or a snack. They are versatile, nutritious, quick and easy to make, and loved by all ages – from the under-2s to the over-70s, in my experience. Perfect.

10 Easy Ideas for Lunch or Dinner

Try these easy wraps for kids as an easy lunch or meal when you want to change up the usual sandwich options. They’re quick, full of nutrition, and have lots of kid-friendly flavor. Plus: you can customize them as needed for food allergies for the chewing ability of your child!

Wraps for Kids

I love finding new ways to make easy lunches for kids and these wrap ideas are great for when you want to change up the usual sandwich options. Each of these ideas takes just minutes, they’re really easy to change up based on what you have on hand, and they can be served at home or packed for daycare, preschool, or school.

Ingredients You Need

To make these recipes, you’ll need:

  • Wraps (which can be tortilla, lavash, or another very thin flatbread)
  • Something sticky to help hold it together (such as hummus, mayo, nut or seed butter, Nutella, or cream cheese)
  • Protein-rich fillings (such as sliced deli meat, cheese, chicken or tuna salad, and hummus)
  • Produce (like thinly sliced cucumbers or lettuce, thinly sliced or diced fruit like strawberries, peaches or banana)

TIP: See each flavor idea for the specifics.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To make a wrap, here’s the general method. Scroll down to the bottom of the post for the full information.

  1. Lay out the wrap or tortilla.
  2. Spread with any condiments, nut or seed butters, and the like.
  3. Add any proteins or produce.
  4. Starting at one side, roll up very tightly. Cut with a serrated knife.

TIP: The ones shown here are all meant to be served and eaten cold.

1. Banana Peanut Butter Roll

Trade out the peanut butter for sunflower seed butter or almond butter, according to your preferences and whether it needs to be nut-free or not. This is one of our favorites since it’s so simple—and so good.

Pair with: This is nice with a smoothie, some cheese, or a simple veggie side.

2. Strawberry Peanut Butter Roll

Similar to the idea, but replace the banana with diced strawberries. It takes a few more minutes but the flavor combo is really nice. (Use a replacement for the peanut butter as needed.)

3. Chicken Salad Wrap

To make this easy for kids, I spread it onto the wrap, then roll up and slice. I use prepared chicken salad from our grocery store, but you can make it at home if you prefer.

Pair with: Thinly sliced snap peas and berries.

4. Salmon Salad Wrap

Wild canned salmon is budget-friendly and filled with both calcium and healthy fats. And it’s super yummy as Salmon Salad. Make it the same way as the chicken salad above.

5. Ham and Cheese Wrap

This one is inspired by a snack they used to make at our daycare where tortilla and ham were rolled around a cheese stick. This works really well to slice into bite-size rolls (and the cheese stick works better than a slice of cheese shape-wise).

Pair with: Snap peas, sliced for younger eaters, and fruit cup in 100% fruit juice.

Pair turkey, cheese, and mustard—add shredded lettuce if desired too–and roll up. Cut in half or cut into rounds. Easy and so yummy.

Pair with: Add sliced cucumber and thinly sliced apple to complete this meal.

7. Hummus and Cucumber Roll Up

Whether homemade hummus or store bought, spread it onto a tortilla. Then place thinly sliced matchstick cucumbers on half. Roll up and slice. This has a nice mix of textures, yet isn’t too complex for little kids to actually eat.

You can also make a deconstructed Hummus Wrap.

Pair with: Veggie Straws and diced peaches.

8. Cream Cheese, Jam, and Fruit

Combine cream cheese with all-fruit jam and thinly sliced strawberries into a sweet wrap that’s a fun way to mix up the usual flavor options. My littlest kiddo surprised me by loving this one!

Pair with: Warmed thawed peas and a yogurt tube.

9. Chocolate Berry

A thin layer of Nutella (or a similar chocolate spread) goes a long way and is seriously yummy when rolled up in a tortilla with thinly sliced fresh fruit. I like this one just cut in half since the layers of ingredients are fairly thin. Try peaches, strawberries, or even banana.

Pair with: Sliced cucumbers and halved grapes.

10. Shredded Chicken Wrap

Spread a wrap with mayo or mustard and shredded chicken. Add some shredded lettuce and a drizzle of Ranch (or another dressing the kids like). Roll up, slice, and serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I make wraps easier for my kids to eat?

You can try to make sure that the tortillas you start with are soft—many are actually labeled “soft” and those will be easier to chew. You can also cut them up into smaller rounds and let the kids take them apart and eat the components separately as needed.

What kind of tortillas are best for these?

I like whole wheat “soft” tortillas best (they work best when they’re at room temperature and not super cold, which can make them firmer) or regular flour tortillas. You can also use a whole grain lavash bread, which is usually very thin, or any other thin flatbread you like.

How can I keep wraps fresh in a lunchbox?

Most of these will be fine in an airtight lunchbox. With the banana peanut butter wrap, it will last fine until lunch if you place the rounds right next to each other (as shown in the image above), which limits the amount of air that gets onto the cut bananas (which lessens the browning).

Best Tips for Wraps

  • Use tortillas labeled “soft” for ones that will be easiest to eat.
  • Wraps at room temperature or even very slightly warmed will be easier to roll than cold ones, which may firm up slightly.
  • Roll each as tightly as you can to help them hold together.
  • Put a little of your condiment or sticky ingredient (like peanut butter or hummus) on the edges of the wrap to help it hold together.
  • Slice using a serrated knife.
  • Pair with fruit or veggies, or simple sides—as well as water or milk as you like.

Trends in baby food packaging: packaging as a toy, a means of communication with parents and an element of eco-strategy

The choice of baby food in Russian retail is huge! Manufacturers are exercising original packaging solutions to attract young parents. The packaging of baby food has its own trends - it is with the help of packaging that brands develop children, conduct a dialogue with parents, or even prepare babies for adulthood.

Coming to the store, the buyer faces a large selection of goods. Packaging helps him make a decision. Often these criteria are standard - attractiveness and informativeness. As for baby food, for parents, the main indicators are the quality and safety of the product. But the convenience of packaging becomes its additional bonus. nine0003

We talk about Russian and international experience in attracting the attention of customers using the examples of several brands that produce baby food.

Packaging as a toy

The first thing to mention is the spiders. This is the most "fresh" innovation in the category of baby food, which appeared in Russia much later than in the West. The word “spiders” is still unusual even for experienced parents, and you can often hear the wording “soft packaging”. But now such containers are used in more and more categories, they are used for classic fruit purees, and for dry cereals. One of the main advantages of this package is that it is difficult for a child to get dirty or spill the contents. In addition, spiders are convenient for moms, they are light and compact, they can be taken for a walk or on the road. nine0003

All children love toys. Therefore, it is obvious to use this emotional component in the packaging of baby food. The FrutoNyanya brand followed this path when it offered toy covers to its consumers.

“Our pouch-packed fruit purees come with a special certified toy lid, thanks to which the child can learn colors and count, collect various figures, which in the end can positively influence fine motor skills. For our youngest consumers, we produce fruit-shaped pouch packs to introduce the baby to the first fruits,” says Anna Ivanova Marketing Director of PROGRESS JSC, manufacturer of the FrutoNyanya brand .

Such entertainment also brings up perseverance and independence, stimulates positive emotions. Frutolids are hexagonal with 2 and 3 notches on the sides. And thanks to these grooves, they interlock with each other quite tightly. They can be assembled not only in a plane, but also to build multi-level structures, developing the child's imagination.

Packaging as a tool for dialogue

The next trend in packaging is to communicate with parents. Now manufacturers are striving for the most open dialogue with the consumer. Full information about the composition is placed on the label inscription. In this composition, the consumer understands all the ingredients, there are no abbreviations.

Producers of baby food talk about the production, methods of growing vegetables and fruits, and their suppliers. This trend is also reflected in the packaging – the transparency of the packaging is becoming an important way of communication. For example, transparent labels, fully or partially transparent packaging. nine0003

Packaging as an element of eco-responsibility

Another important component of packaging is its tactile qualities, dullness, craft solutions. Consumers are increasingly interested in features that make packaging easier to recycle and reuse. For example, completely biodegradable materials or materials that can be used as fertilizer, or even edible materials. But this trend is still in its infancy in Russia, in the future we will see more completed projects. nine0003

An example here is the young British brand Little Tummy, which is based on the principle of sustainability. Even today, the plastics and papers they use are 100% recyclable and recyclable.

Going even further, Swedish brand Alex & Phil are committed to reducing the use of conventional plastic and gradually moving towards bioplastics and renewable resources such as sugar cane. Starting in 2019, they have switched to aluminum-free packaging, which is 80% bioplastic, and their caps are made entirely of this material. nine0003

Packaging as Smart Entertainment very popular with consumers. Thanks to packaging, manufacturers can create games and competitions in augmented reality mode, quickly and easily redirect the consumer to the site.

For example, last year, in partnership with the popular Shazam app, the FrutoNyanya brand released a limited series of liquid cereals with a special QR code that allows parents and kids not only to eat healthy, but also listen to fairy tales at night using augmented reality.

Packaging as a guide to the world of "adult" food

The above trends relate to the Russian market. In the West, there are ways to attract buyers. In Europe and America, brands have long been offering their young customers an "adult" range of dishes. Of course, it meets all the standards of baby food, but in terms of taste it is close to the dishes of an adult diet. This trend can also be seen in the packaging of baby food. For example, the French baby food brand Bledina offers products packaged in an airtight plastic plate. Parents warm up the dishes and, without shifting from this plate, feed the child. The idea of this package is that serving a dish for little ones is no different from serving for adults. nine0003

In addition, in Europe, manufacturers of children's yoghurts and puddings only offer large packages. There are no such micro-jars as we have on store shelves. Only a large amount is offered in order for the child to get used to adult standards from childhood.

* * *

It has long been clear that when choosing a product, the buyer pays attention to the additional benefits that packaging can bring. Moreover, conceptual packaging useful for a child can increase the purchase intention. And when you work with children's goods, you need to ensure that both an adult buyer and a small consumer of the product are satisfied. Thus, every year manufacturers try to come up with more and more new approaches. nine0003

Still have questions?

1. What is the packaging process like?

The production process begins with the choice of material for future packaging. Next, the material is printed according to the layout. The main type of printing on film or kraft paper is flexo printing (a type of printing using flexo forms and special quick-drying inks). The package is formed after complete drying of the paints and lamination.

2. What is a flexo plate? nine0245

Flexo plate - a plate that is put on the shaft of flexographic equipment for further transfer of ink to the printed surface, thereby creating an impression.

3. What types of bags are available and which one should I choose?

There are several types of bags: doypack, with side folds, three-seam, sachet, stick, vacuum, packing, craft. To select future packaging, several factors should be taken into account: the type of packaged product and its properties, consistency, ways of placing on the counter.
