Baby brezza glass food maker review

Is the Baby Brezza Food Maker Worth the Cost?

What is the Baby Brezza Food Maker?

The Baby Brezza Food Maker is an all-in-one baby food maker that allows you to steam and puree fruits, veggies, and other baby foods in one step. Sure, the end product is the same as you might get if you steamed food in a pot and then put it in the blender, but the Baby Brezza makes things easier because there’s just one step: put the chopped food in and turn it on.

Of course, if you just want to steam or just want to puree, the Brezza offers those options as well. And since getting used to different consistencies is important for your foodie-in-training, the Baby Brezza lets you choose the texture of the finished product.

Here’s what you can expect from the Baby Brezza:

  • Dish-washer safe glass bowl that makes up to 4 cups of food
  • Purees in about ten minutes
  • Options to steam and blend, steam only, or blend only
  • Removable water tank for easy filling
  • Steam tank

How Does the Baby Brezza Food Maker Work?

Usually, making baby food is a multi-step process: you have to peel and chop, steam, then mash. The Baby Brezza makes that a bit easier by allowing you to combine the last two steps, getting perfectly pureed baby food with the push of a button.

Since the baby food maker produces up to four cups of food, you’ll have plenty on hand to both feed your baby and to store in the fridge or freezer for convenient future meals. You can store in ice-cube trays, small freezer-safe containers, or pick up reusable baby pouches and stash them for easy meals later.

Baby Brezza Food Maker Review

The Baby Brezza Food Maker is a pretty pricey registry item, so you’ll want to be sure that you’ll use it. Luckily, the machine is more versatile than you might think at first. Of course, it’s great for making purees for babies, but it can also be convenient for mom’s meals. Using the steam button you can make hard-boiled eggs, pasta, and soups. Anything that makes it easier to stay healthy and eat nutritious meals postpartum is a win in my book.

Another benefit of the Baby Brezza is that it’s easy to clean. We’ve all done battle with a blender that just never comes clean, but you won’t have that problem with the Baby Brezza. The food bowl can be rinsed and put in the dishwasher, giving you easy cleanup. The water container  and other parts are also removable, so you can be sure they’re up to your standards.

One downside to the Baby Brezza (or, let’s be honest, any attempt to make baby food at home), is the mess of dividing up the food and storing it. The Brezza has a small spout to make pouring puree easier, but as you fill pouches or Tupperware containers you’re likely to wind up with some puree on the counter.

What to Consider Before Buying a Baby Brezza Food Maker

The biggest thing to consider before buying a Baby Brezza Food Maker is the cost. Baby food jars and pouches typically cost around $1 to $1.50 each, so if you use the Baby Brezza frequently, it will likely pay for itself. However, if you only use it occasionally and still end up buying most of your purees, the cost probably isn’t worth it — especially considering that most babies are on purees for a fairly short time.

While it is convenient to have purees with the press of a button, the Baby Brezza isn’t accomplishing anything you couldn’t easily do with a pot and stick blender — which are much cheaper and probably already on hand. Now, if they could design a food maker that does the peeling and chopping, that would be something worth paying for!

Final Verdict

If you have the money and kitchen space to accommodate the Baby Brezza Food Maker, it’s a good purchase. Eliminating the step of draining steamed food and putting it into a blender is nice, and of course it’s great to have fewer dishes to wash.

However, if you can’t afford the Baby Brezza or are on the fence about buying one, it’s ok. Start by making your own baby food the old-fashioned way, through a two-step steam and puree process. If you love it, you can consider investing in a baby food maker like the Baby Brezza. There are also plenty of other baby food makers on the market that you can consider as well if you’re looking for different price points or features.

RELATED: Best Baby Food Makers

The Skinny

The Baby Brezza Complete is an all-in-one baby food maker that utilizes one container for both steaming and pureeing. This type of processor is pretty cool and limits the amount of time parents need to spend making food or moving food from one container to another for cooking and blending. Unfortunately, the consistency of the pureed food for the Brezza is lacking, and we had trouble making any kind of food without larger chunks, which is not suitable for younger babies. While the process is relatively simple with a set and forget method, the final product is disappointing, and the clean up is more labor-intensive than a processor that does not cook. We think parents are still better off cooking food on their stove and using the Sage Spoonfuls Puree and Blend for smooth pureeing and to save money, prevent chemical taste, and decrease cleanup time and energy.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Baby Brezza company strives to create parenting solutions that make life easier for parents so they can enjoy their little ones and find time to relax. From baby bottles to one-touch food makers, Baby Brezza has solutions for some of the problems parents may be facing.

Performance Comparison

The Baby Brezza Complete is a neat concept with a "set and forget" one container system. Unfortunately, the process doesn't work as well as you'd expect with chunky puree instead of smooth.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

Puree Quality

The Baby Brezza earned a below-average score for puree quality. In general, the consistency of the purees vary greatly depending on the type of food, and sometimes even with the same kind of food with different batches. The inconsistency makes it difficult to ensure the food didn't have hidden chunks-even food as soft as bananas had large pieces leftover after a minute of puree.

Banana puree with large chunks still present.KaleBroccoli

The Brezza purees sweet potato the best. But, considering that a baby can't live on sweet potatoes alone, it is disappointing that other foods do not blend as well.

The combination of apple and plum also blended relatively smoothly with no large chunks, yet most of the food items still had bigger pieces or skins attached after blending.

When pureeing rice, the Brezza left lots of rice in its original form and didn't manage to create a consistency that was truly smooth.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

Rice did almost nothing at all and looked relatively the same after the designated blend time, and kale and broccoli looked more were decent, but did not actually puree and wouldn't work for baby's first foods. Overall, the foods we tried did not puree smoothly, even after steaming, which negates the whole reason for using the Brezza.

The Brezza earned its highest score for ease of use, thanks largely to the single container where food is both cooked and blended without much attention from parents.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

Ease of Use

The Brezza has one of the highest scores for ease of use, making it clear that simplicity was in mind when designing this product.

While the user interface on the Brezza may not be the most intuitive, it is still easy enough to learn after you use it a few times.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

Parents need to chop the food, place it in the unit, set the timer according to the instructions, and walk away. This simplicity is what we think most parents envision when it comes to an all-in-one product—one container where all the magic happens, with little involvement. The Brezza has a simple LED screen, and you don't have to measure anything for steaming as long as the tank is full, you are ready to go.

The Brezza holds about three cups of food, so you'll have extra, and it works reasonably quickly, given what it has to accomplish. If only the puree quality were better, the Brezza might be one impressive little powerhouse.

Accessing and cleaning the tank on the Brezza isn't difficult, but it is a process you need to do regularly with vinegar and water. Once clean you need to run the Brezza through the preparation cycle 2-3 times.

Health and Safety

The Brezza Complete earned a below-average health and safety score with a stronger edge for safety than health. One of the key tests for health is being able to "taste" the plastic or a chemical smell or taste when using the product. The Brezza has a strong metallic/plastic taste on our first run out of the box, making apple/plum puree. We then ran the steamer through two complete cycles trying to get rid of the taste or "break it in." We then tried broccoli, which still had a faint metallic taste. We worry that this means chemicals could or are being transferred to the baby's food. We recommend running it 2-3 times before use to avoid the strong chemical metallic taste.

Cooking any kind of food in a plastic container comes with possible health concerns and in the case of the Brezza resulted in a chemical and plastic aftertaste to the food on the first few uses.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

The second concern is the container is plastic. While the plastic is BPA-free, studies indicate that other plastics still leach chemicals into food and liquids and that those chemicals may be acting as endocrine disrupters. This is more of a concern when plastic is heated, making us wish that all of the makers had glass containers. The Brezza does have a metal water tank for the steam, but a metal and glass combination would be nicer than plastic and metal.

The Brezza has some nods to safety with a locking lid, safety switch, and overheating protection. Because you don't have to transfer food from a steamer to a blender, there is less chance of getting burns from the steam, and the steam escape port is on the side furthest from the handle.

The Baby Brezza has 5 parts to clean if you don't count the containers for prepared food.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

Ease of Cleaning

The Brezza earned one of the lowest scores for ease of cleaning, making the Brezza Complete the most difficult to clean.

If you don't immediately rinse the blades on the Baby Brezza Complete, you will have difficulty cleaning it as the pureed food will dry and stick inside the holes.

Credit: BabyGearLab Staff

The Brezza has five parts in total. The bowl, blade, and bowl lid are dishwasher safe after removing the driveshaft from the bowl. However, we suggest you hand wash all items, so you don't heat the plastic more times than necessary to prevent degradation and decrease the potential for possible chemical leaching. Cleaning the drive shaft can be done with a damp cloth. We recommend rinsing the part immediately after use. Otherwise, the smaller holes in the blades fill will be challenging to clean.

Daily cleaning isn't too bad with the Brezza, but the ongoing cleaning is where things get tricky and a little more labor-intensive. The stainless steel heating plate will need to be scrubbed with an abrasive pad to remove the mineral scaling. Descaling can be done on an as-needed basis, and the unit should not be run if scaling appears. The tank itself will need ongoing cleaning as well to remove mineral deposits. This process involves vinegar and water, which means you need to keep vinegar on hand and check the tank.

The directions say the steam cycle needs to be run 2-3 times after using vinegar in the decalcifying process.
