Q & A Fresh Squeezed

Making my own baby food seems time consuming. How much time does it take?

This depends on the food and how many ingredients you’re including, but on average we hear from moms that it takes 30-45 minutes to make a few weeks worth of baby food, from start to finish. If you make smaller batches, it’ll take less time. Moms also tell us the time spent is worth it, providing a sense of craft and creativity, as well as shared time with little ones in the kitchen and of course superior nutritional benefits.

Do you have a discount program for parents of multiples?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer exclusive discounts for parents of multiples.

What do I need to make my own baby food?

In general, moms who make their own baby food usually have devices to cook, blend and mash food to the correct consistency for their baby, like a puree for beginners or a mash as they grow. If not, our line includes all of the tools you’ll need, and all are designed for easy use as well as easy clean up. You may already have a few tools in the kitchen that will do the job!

How do you store homemade baby food?

Our Fresh Squeezed System offers the latest in convenient storing technology, but people also use a combination of ice cube trays and plastic zip bags. Food is made in batches and then typically frozen. Food can be frozen for up to two months and food placed directly in the refrigerator can be served for up to 48 hours according to U.S. Food Safety Guidelines.

What is the benefit of the Fresh Squeezed System?

Our unique system is the first product to let you press, store and serve homemade baby food from a convenient pouch. We offer both single-use and reusable pouches with our system. Our single-use pouches store very easily in the freezer – making the best use of your space. You can also take them directly from the freezer, ready to go and serve directly from pouch. You can also pair with our Couple of Spoons, which attaches to the end of the pouch and squeezes the puree right onto the spoon for easy feeding.

What’s the best way to warm-up my squeeze pouch?

Simply place your squeeze pouch into a bowl of warm water for a few minutes to reheat. This will help it gently thaw and warm the food. Remember to always test the temperature before feeding heated food to your little one.

Is there a way for me to know how long my food has been stored?

Yes, there’s a spot right on the back of the pouch for notes, where you can write the date, time and specific ingredients. This is also the best way to keep track of your food’s time in the fridge or freezer.

Are your products BPA free?

Yes and they are also phthalate and PVC free.

Can you press chunkier foods?

Nope, our pouches are designed to store blended, well-mashed or pureed food. You can also use them to store snack foods like yogurt, applesauce and fruit purees/smoothies.

When I pull my press out of the tube, it sucks the food back up.

Yes this will happen. The best thing to do is press your food, detach the tube from the bag with the press still down, cap bag and then pull the press out of the now detached tube.

When I use my reusable pouch I feel a lot of pressure and it won’t press.

The first thing to do is make sure you have unscrewed the spout slightly before pressing. This will allow the air to escape when filling. If this does not work please see “What do I do if food gets stuck in the press?”

What do I do if food gets stuck in the press?

Sometimes even the best mixer leaves a chunk behind. You’ll know this is the case if you are pressing and feel significant resistance. If you feel resistance, stop and unscrew the tube and pour puree back in the bowl. You will then either find the chunk lodged in the base of the tube or in the bowl. If in the bowl, remove it. If in the tube, use the force of the water from your sink to push it out.

When I push the press down and food squirts out of the top of the tube and not into the pouch…what am I doing wrong?

The first thing to do is make sure you have unscrewed the spout slightly before pressing. It could be that you are pushing the press down too quickly or the consistency of the food in the tube is too chunky.

Are your pouches safe for air travel?

Our pouches travel very nicely and it is a great design benefit. Please note that our pouches do not meet the minimum ounce requirement so you will have to proactively tell TSA you are carrying your baby’s homemade food. You may be asked to go through an additional screening once through security.

Where is your product made?

Our products are manufactured with certified and approved factories in Asia. Our products are tested by third-party, independently accredited testing laboratories. Infantino products meet or exceed all U.S. and International Safety Guidelines and Regulations.

What are the benefits of making my own baby food?

There are lots of great reasons! First, when you make your own baby food you get to decide what ingredients go into it, which means you know exactly what your little one is eating. You choose the mix of ingredients and flavors that are right for your child, depending on their personal tastes and diet. This helps you eliminate preservatives and added sugars, and lets you go totally organic if desired. Homemade baby food also helps food retain its natural textures, colors and nutrients. By getting creative, you can also expose them to a range of foods and flavors that are not available in pre-packaged food options, expanding their palette and helping them discover new tastes. And last but not least, buying and making your own food can save you money.

What baby foods should I feed my baby?

What to feed your baby depends on a lot of things like age (actual and developmental), family diet (like, if you’re vegetarian), their personal taste and what’s fresh or in season. Of course, we always recommend that you check with your pediatrician and review food safety from the FDA website:

Best Baby Food Pouches (Easy Homemade Ideas)

Learn how to make homemade Baby Food Pouches, no muss, no fuss, with these 15 easy recipe ideas. These are a great way to save money, share lots of flavors with babies and toddlers, and have convenient foods ready to go!

Baby Food Pouches

I always made my own baby food pouches because I like how affordable they are and how once you have a set of reusable pouches, there are so many options! Plus, you can feed many things you’re making for the rest of the family in a pouch, which means you can share flavors with the little ones even if they aren’t quite up to finger foods yet.

I view baby food pouches as one component of feeding a baby and like to mix purees with baby led weaning as a way to expose baby to a wide variety of flavors and textures from an early age.

I also find them very convenient for offering smoothies well into the toddler years!

Ingredients in You Need

What you need for your pouch adventure will depend on what you want to feed your baby! Basically you need something pureed (or a food like yogurt or applesauce that has a very pouch-friendly texture already) and a reusable pouch.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s the general gist of how to make a baby food pouch. Scroll down to the bottom of the post for recipe ideas and best tips!

  1. Choose your puree and prepare it. Let it cool as needed. (Or pull out the yogurt or applesauce.)
  2. Fill the pouch, making sure that the cap is on if using the kind with the zipper opening on the bottom. (Otherwise it will all run right out the top!)
  3. Store in the fridge or serve to baby.

TIP: As a quick an easy snack option, I like to mix half yogurt and half applesauce right in the pouch.

What can I put into a baby food pouch?

You just need the food to be smooth enough that it easily passes through the opening of the pouch, so anything that’s pureed or the consistency of pureed soup or yogurt will work. Generally speaking you can do:

  • Applesauce
  • Fruit purees
  • Vegetable purees
  • Baby food combinations
  • Pureed meats
  • Pureed soups
  • Smoothies
  • Yogurt

TIP: You can also use any of my go-to Baby Food Combinations too!

Flavor Ideas for Baby Food Pouches

These are some of my favorite recipe ideas to add to a pouch.

  1. Applesauce
  2. Apple Flax Yogurt: Equal parts Apple Puree and plain yogurt, plus a sprinkle of ground flax.
  3. Baby Oatmeal with Applesauce mixed in for flavor.
  4. Banana Yogurt
  5. Pear Coconut Puree: Pear Puree with full-fat coconut milk mixed in.
  6. Pear Yogurt: Equal parts Pear Puree and plain yogurt.
  7. Red Lentil Coconut Soup
  8. Sweet Potato Tomato Soup
  9. Mango Smoothie
  10. Mashed Butternut Squash
  11. Mashed Roasted Sweet Potato
  12. Spinach-Pea Puree (alone or with Applesauce)
  13. Simple Green Smoothie
  14. Strawberry Smoothie
  15. Veggie Chili, pureed smooth

TIP: For the foods, like soup, that you’d usually serve warm, you can serve them warm in a pouch too. Just be sure they are warm and not hot. Test on your wrist like you would a baby bottle.

How long can I store baby food pouches?

I recommend making them 24 hours ahead or less so they are as fresh as possible. But you can make batches of purees and stash them in the freezer, so the pouch assembly part is quick and easy.

Do I need a baby food pouch maker?

Honestly? No. I tried one and didn’t like it because it took up space in my cabinets and the pouches themselves weren’t reusable, which seemed like a waste and a lot of money. Using reusable pouches is easy and more affordable.

What are the best reusable pouches?

I prefer the silicone Squeasy Gear pouch, which comes in a few sizes (I start with the 3.5 ounce size for babies). It’s easy to learn from as early as 6 or 7 months and the kids can use them for smoothies and applesauce well through toddlerhood as they are very durable. You may want to remove the lid when serving to kids so they don’t play with it.

I also like this set of 3.4 ounce Weesprouts reusable pouches a lot, which are a nice size for babies (there is a larger size too!) and they are easy to clean and use.

Favorite Store-bought Baby Food

There are so many great store bought options! I like the Amara Organic Baby Food (paid affiliate link), which locks in the nutrients, texture, and taste of fresh foods. You just add breastmilk, formula, or water— and the flavors are delicious with straight forward ingredients.

I also like Happy Family Organics Clearly Crafted and Plum Organics. Those are just a few options—there is a lot to choose from as you well know from the baby food aisle!

TIP: I recommend serving pouches occasionally along with regular solids from a spoon and baby led weaning style so baby has a chance to learn how to suck, swallow, move all sorts of textures around in their mouths, and gain the skills needed to be ready for finger foods around 9 months.

How to Store

Store pre-made pouches in the fridge for up to 5 days. Store leftover pouches in the fridge for up to 24 hours and serve again. You can also freeze pouches for up to 6 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight or at room temperature.

Best Tips for Success

  • Add 2 tablespoons full fat coconut cream or plain yogurt to the mashed sweet potato or squash for healthy fats.

No matter how zealously environmentalists fight with humanity in the issue of people using plastic bags, their diversity is increasing, functionality is expanding, and the "bags" themselves litter apartments, landfills and the environment. Impractical, fragile and unattractive packaging is used once - during the purchase of goods, then safely thrown away. But at the same time, there is a great alternative - zip bags. Their range is huge, they can be used many times, their scope is simply limitless, but first things first. nine0003

“Package” star

What is a zip-pack? Despite its rather unusual name, such packaging has appeared in everyday life for a long time. In the West - back in the 60s of the last century, in Russia a little later - in the nineties. True, then there were few of them; packages with a zip lock began to be sold in the public domain only in recent years. Since then, their total "offensive" on the population began, both in business and in everyday life.

Such popularity is easy to explain - the packaging with a convenient and secure fastener can be used anywhere. In such bags you can put household trifles and food. The zip lock, which relies on a simple snap-on mechanism for a lug located on one side of the sinus package, which is soldered on the opposite side, closes very tightly. From this package, it’s not that the contents with the smallest fraction do not spill out, liquid does not even spill out of it. nine0003

History of appearance

Zip-lock bags were created quite consciously. It happened in the USA in 1951 when Flexigrip Inc set out to invent a flexible container that could be closed. The innovative development was brought to its final form for more than one year, the experience of the Japanese company Seisan Nippon Sha was also used, which came up with the minigrip latch, the Americans bought the rights to it, renaming their brainchild Minigrip Inc.

Only in 1968, after 15 years of the company's operation, its owners managed to establish the production of products that could be put into mass production and then sold on the market. The pioneers resold the license to manufacture products to everyone, so the zip package appeared in Europe. nine0003

What is an ordinary ziplock bag?

Translated from English, a ziplock is a zipper. Naturally, on the packages it is not performed in the traditional metal form. We are talking about the use of more compact structures, which, nevertheless, are able to solve the tasks assigned to them.

The ziplock on the bag is made of plastic. As a rule, there are two variations:

  • with a "dog";
  • nine0031 manually latched.

Ziplocks with a "dog" in the vast majority of cases are used on large packages. The little ones just snap. Their disadvantage is the fastening time.

In the beginning it is necessary to get the snap surfaces into each other, and then run the closed fingers along the entire length of the fastener. Otherwise, there may be gaps through which the bag filler can spill out / pour out.

Is such packaging produced in Russia?

On the domestic market, these products are represented by both imported samples and products of our own production. Imported zip-lock bags are most often Chinese products. Its advantage is its low price, but its quality, of course, is very “lame”. Most of the complaints from consumers are caused by the rapid wear of the lock, as well as the unreliable soldering of the package itself.

Russian products are about 10-15% more expensive. Its manufacturers claim that their bags are stronger and more durable. In addition, they offer a wide variety of packaging options. The material from which the bags are made (plastic, paper, multilayer products, including those with a metallized insert), their size, color, package design, and lock may differ. Among the most famous domestic manufacturers, the following companies stand out: Tsar Plast, Viton LLC, Plastica LLC, Smart Media LLC, etc.

Types and features

There are several types of zip bags. Classification can be carried out according to several characteristics. The first is, in fact, what kind of lock the package is equipped with. This may be the traditional system, assuming that the bag contains polypropylene strips on both sides in the upper part, which are tightly closed to each other. Such a lock can be made in two ways:

  • extrusion method - when the fastener appears on the package immediately during the manufacturing process; nine0032
  • welded lock - in this version, it is already soldered with a special device onto the finished package.

Zip bags are also available with a slider closure. These are most often products intended for various household trifles, but they can also be quite large.

Well, as already mentioned, the materials from which the zip bag is made differ. The most popular, due to its low cost and practicality, is polyethylene. There are also packages made of paper, PVC film, foil material. nine0003

The traditional shape is a square or rectangle. However, there are also craft zip-lock bags and doy-packs on sale. We will talk about them in more detail in the next section.

In fact, there is absolutely nothing secret in this type of packaging. We have to deal with it almost daily in one form or another. So, a doypack is a package in which a special opening with a closing valve is provided. Most often, liquids or substances with a thick consistency are placed there (ketchups, mayonnaises, condensed milk, baby food, sauces, etc.). However, in the finished product, such packages usually do not contain a zip lock, they are simply soldered and cannot be reused. But as a separate product, it is quite possible to purchase bags with a zip lock, and even with a spout that closes with a doy-pack valve. nine0003

Kraft bags are also a very common type of packaging among consumers. Its shape is non-standard - it is not just a rectangular bag, but a container with a bottom at the bottom. Such bags are usually filled with coffee, tea, spices, cereals, breakfast cereals, etc.

Who needs it?

At first, such packaging was produced only to meet the needs of entrepreneurs. The scope of use of zip bags has been extremely wide at all times. They packaged products at the factory, laid out the goods in such packaging and retail chains. True, due to the rather high cost compared to ordinary packing bags and penny T-shirts, they did not gain too much popularity in grocery stores. Their use is more appropriate where the sale of piece goods - haberdashery, jewelry, jewelry, household, construction items, sewing accessories. nine0003

A zip bag will also be very useful in everyday life. And not only for economic women, men will appreciate the benefits of using this type of packaging, especially if they need to put things in order in a tool or fishing tackle.

The use of ziplocks in practice

Indeed, the use of the aforementioned bags is very wide. It makes no sense to make them disposable, since the purchase, in principle, will be unprofitable for the user. nine0003

Making a fastener requires a significant investment in equipment for the manufacturer. It is for this reason that most industries produce ziplock bags made of denser polyethylene.

As a result, they can be washed well without deforming, tearing, etc.

Pickling can be used as a domestic use of the indicated bags. It is enough to put a piece of meat in a bag inside, sprinkle it with a mixture of spices and put in the refrigerator. In particular, this helps when there is not enough utensils physically (preparations are underway for the holiday). nine0003

In addition, you can make preparations in ziplocks - freezing fish, vegetables, fruits, etc. You can be sure that the refrigerator is guaranteed to stay clean.

Organize your space

A person in his whole life surrounds himself with so many things that you can easily get lost in this heap of “everything”, not to mention various household trifles. That is why it is so important to be able to competently organize your personal space. In this case, a variety of organizers and packing bags come to the aid of a person. Zip-lock packaging comes in different sizes - from microscopic bags 4x6 cm to fairly roomy bags 35-40 cm wide and up to half a meter high. nine0003

Few people are disappointed in such an acquisition. Bags with locks are inexpensive, they help to securely pack various household trifles, products, seasonal clothes. Due to the fact that they are made of durable polyethylene, their service life will not be too short. Even the containers that housewives use to freeze food will be intact for at least two to three years, according to the girls' reviews.

Unusual area of use

Finally, we hasten to share with readers the original uses of zip bags:

  • Creating a vacuum package - for this, the product is placed in a bag, the lock must be closed, but not completely, a straw is inserted into the remaining hole and air is sucked out of the bag cavity with its help. So the products will keep their freshness longer.
  • Zip bag can be used instead of a piping bag.
  • Also, this type of packaging will protect gadgets during bad weather, the touch screen will work even through a layer of polyethylene.
  • An ice compress can be made with a zippered bag. You need to pour a little liquid soap or shampoo into it, add water (a little bit) inside the package, close it and shake the contents. The bag of foam is placed in the freezer, it will harden very quickly and will help to cope with a baby bump or sprain. nine0032
