19 best maternity bras for pregnancy and nursing 2022

Tender breasts are often one of the first signs of pregnancy, so it makes sense to invest in a comfortable maternity bra long before you start picking out nursery wallpaper. Plus you'll be unlatching your boobs in the pub/gym/playground to feed your new baby before you know it, so it pays to be prepared.

But when should you switch to maternity bras, is under-wiring really a no-no, and why is it so hard to find functional underwear that looks good too? We bring you the lowdown on the best, comfiest and prettiest maternity bras for pregnancy and nursing in 2022.

When should you get a maternity bra?

Maternity bras are designed to cater to your changing shape throughout pregnancy. Once your baby arrives you can then graduate to a nursing bra, which is worn postpartum while breastfeeding. However, many brands now cater to both, so you can wear your favourite new bra as your pregnancy develops and beyond.

'There’s no specific timeframe for when you should start wearing a maternity bra,' says Jill Faulkner, Learning and Development Manager at our fave mum and baby boutique JoJo Maman Bébé. 'However, many pregnant women purchase new bras within the first few weeks of pregnancy to allow for their changing shape, which often happens between the 8-10 weeks stage,' she adds.

The benefits of maternity bras

It may be tempting to throw on your favourite crop top. But wearing a maternity bra designed specifically for pregnancy and nursing comes with a number of benefits:

  • Breastfeeding: Planning to leave the house? if you opt for breastfeeding, then a decent nursing bra is essential once your new baby arrives as you're going to need quick access to your boobs on the move. 'Most nursing bras provide ease of access when feeding or expressing,' explains Faulkner.
  • Leaky boobs: In the early days before your milk flow settles, your boobs can get leaky. Nursing bras usually come in stretchy breathable material that is big enough to fit breast pads, should you need to soak up excess milk.
  • Clips: Those all-important clips that you find on most maternity bras provide easy access at feeding time, wherever you happen to be!
  • Comfort: Resist the urge to simply size up your everyday underwear, as comfort is key during pregnancy and beyond. 'Breast tissue is very delicate and sensitive to change,' says Faulkner. 'Wearing a well-fitting bra through pregnancy will help minimise stretching and reduce back pain, as it will help distribute the weight evenly, easing any strain on your neck, shoulders and back.'

Should you avoid underwire bras while pregnant?

Women are often advised to side-step underwire bras during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it’s thought that wiring could put pressure on your milk glands. But if you've always worn a structured bra, departure from the support you're used to may feel like a step too far. While soft cupped bras do tend to be more comfortable, the good news is there is no concrete evidence to suggest that underwire bras are bad for your breasts, so as long as you opt for well-fitting underwear you are good to go.

'The wires in regular bras tend to have very little flex in them, meaning they can become restrictive and uncomfortable as your boobs and bump grow,' says Faulkner. 'There’s no clear evidence that underwire bras can cause harm, but they must be measured and fitted correctly regardless of whether the wearer is pregnant or not. The wire should fit flat to the chest wall and extend near to your armpit encapsulating all of the breast tissue.'

If you prefer extra support, Faulkner recommends investing in a maternity bra with Flexi or gel wires. 'These wires help reduce concerns such as mastitis and blocked milk ducts,' she adds.

How to measure for a maternity bra

For help choosing the right maternity bra, check for the following:

    • Rib band: This should sit parallel to the floor. 'If the band rides up in the back, it’s too big,' explains Felicity Savage, Associate Designer at Bravado Designs. 'You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably underneath. If you can fit more than two fingers, it’s too loose.'
    • Cups: The fabric in the cup should be smooth with adequate coverage. 'If there is puckering or extra room, it’s too big,' says Savage. 'If the top edge cuts into the breast, it’s too small. Breast tissue should not spill out of the sides of the bra.'
    • Straps: The shoulder straps should anchor the bra. 'If the straps are slipping off, they should be tightened, or a smaller cup size may be needed,' she adds. 'If the straps are digging in, they should be loosened, or a larger cup size may be needed.'

The advantages of different types of bras for pregnant and nursing mothers

Wearing a bra that is too tight is hardly a pleasure. But it is quite difficult to predict how the breasts will change during pregnancy and after childbirth: the body of each woman is unique and changes in different ways. For some, breasts increase by just one size, while for someone it can grow by three sizes or even more. Therefore, it is recommended to wear bras and tank tops with well-designed cuts that can adapt to changes in body shape and provide you with constant comfort.

During the day, it's best to wear a comfortable, seamless nursing bra with no wires but support. Such a bra can be worn even during pregnancy, when your regular bras become too small for you. During the breastfeeding period, it is good to use bras with detachable cups so that you can feed your baby simply and discreetly.

Wear a comfortable, breathable sleep bra at night to keep your bra pads in place and make breastfeeding easier.

How to choose the size of a nursing bra?

When choosing a bra, the most important thing is to measure your breasts correctly. This can be done at home in comfortable conditions or in a store with the help of a specialist. Every woman is unique, so measurement is the very first and most important step.

Once you have decided on your size, try on the bra to make sure you feel comfortable in it. At the same time, you can check whether the fasteners and detachable cups of the bra are comfortable, whether its shape and quality of the material suits you, how well it supports the chest, whether it is invisible under clothes, and so on.

Check whether it is convenient to unfasten the fasteners of the bra with one hand. This is important because you will have to unfasten and fasten them with one hand all the time - with the other you will hold the child.

Remember that every woman is unique, so size is just a guideline. We recommend trying on bras before buying to find the best fit for you. There are many different models of nursing bras, so you are sure to find one that will provide you with comfort, ease of feeding and look great at the same time.

      All about nursing bras!

      Bras

What is the difference between a nursing bra and a normal bra? When should you buy it? How to choose the right nursing bra? Can I sleep in it and should I wear it all the time? The answers to these questions are in our article.

What is the difference between a nursing bra and a normal bra?

The main difference is the ability to expose one breast by unfastening the cup. In order to expose the chest in a regular bra, you need to unfasten the fastener of the bra on the back, lift the bra up, i.e. almost take it off. In a nursing bra, you can simply unfasten the cup with a clip, pull one (!) Cup down, exposing the chest while not completely. The chest turns out to be almost completely closed, in such a bra you can feed a child even in a public place, but, of course, in a secluded corner.

The main difference between a nursing bra and a regular bra is the ability to unfasten the cup and expose the chest without removing the bra.

When to buy a nursing bra - before childbirth? After childbirth?

Our recommendation is to have at least one nursing bra with which you will go to the hospital 2-3 weeks before the expected birth. No need to think that as soon as you give birth, milk will immediately come, and the breast will become larger. In the body after childbirth, hormonal changes occur, so the breast can change in any direction - both decrease and increase. Therefore, you should not stock up on bras for feeding before childbirth. It is better to wait until lactation is established.

But one must be before delivery! So calmer))

It is necessary to buy one nursing bra 2-3 weeks before childbirth, and at least one more for a shift 1-2 weeks after childbirth, when lactation is established.

During lactation, especially at the beginning, leakage of milk often occurs. It is absolutely impossible for a nursing mother to walk in a wet bra, so there must be another bra for a shift.

By the end of the first or second week of lactation, the size of the nursing breast becomes more or less stable. That's when you can go for the second (and possibly third) bra! It is better, of course, to come to the store yourself, choose what fits in size, is convenient in design and comfortable in materials.

If you have already decided on a model before childbirth, then after childbirth, if you cannot come to the store, ask someone close to you (mother, husband) to buy the next bra. Competent consultants will help you adjust the size if you need a larger belt or cup.

How to choose a nursing bra?

During pregnancy, breast size changes - some have more, some have less, but it changes for everyone. And the size is the first thing you need to decide.

How to determine the size of a bra? The best and easiest way is to visit a lingerie store that has several brands of bras and many different sizes. Not the fact that this will be your usual lingerie store. During pregnancy, the breasts can change even several sizes, you may need the help of consultants who will determine your new breast size. Therefore, feel free to go to the store!

You can of course use the size charts. But the accuracy of determining the size according to the tables is only 30% -40%. Perhaps you will determine one bra size from the table, and the next one is ideal for you. But without trying on this neighboring size, you will not know about it.

Once you have determined the size of the bra that suits you, the next step is to find a shop that has nursing bras in your size. And already there to select the shape and model of the bra.

      What are nursing bras?

We will tell only about breastfeeding bras for large breasts, which are presented in the Two Planets stores. But you will see approximately the same designs in other stores.

      • pitted. You can even sleep in them (more on this later in the article). Nursing breasts are very sensitive, so the absence of hard elements is very important.

Perhaps for most people this design will be unusual - the shape of such a bra looks outdated. But, believe me, this is only until you put on your clothes. In clothes, the bra looks as if it were a regular bra. These models reliably support the chest, they can be safely washed in the washing machine. Bones will not fall out of them, which simply do not exist in these models. Our advice is to check them out! At least don't hesitate to try them on in the store.

      • underwire with seamless cup. They give the bust a more defined look than underwired models, and the seamless cups are invisible under knitwear.

Has the usual look of a daily bra, the cup is detachable with a clip to expose one breast and feed the baby. The absence of seams on the cup makes the bra especially comfortable, nothing irritates the nipple. The bra cup can be soft (without foam rubber) or with foam rubber - choose what is more comfortable for you.

      • with underwire and sewn cup. Very similar to regular bras, but have a detachable cup. New for 2020, Elomi Molly is the most comfortable and roomy underwired nursing bra according to our customers.

The beauty of these models is that they come in color, not just basic colors.

Where can I buy a nursing bra?

If you live in a big city (especially in Moscow, St. Petersburg) - do not be lazy, go to the shops, determine the size of the bra, choose the shape together with consultants. There is nothing worse when “there is a lot of underwear, but I don’t wear anything from what I have. Just this one." This is what many of our clients say, who buy lingerie in online stores in full confidence that they know their size and can choose a bra for themselves in 15 minutes by a courier.

In Two Planets stores, customers spend from half an hour to an hour in fitting rooms - this is the average time for picking up linen. It happens even more if we select not only daily underwear. And we choose from the entire range, not from 3-5 pieces. Plus, at your service is the help of professional consultants who dress women in underwear all their working hours. And if you choose a bra for feeding, then all the more you need to take this issue seriously. After all, the linen will be on you all day, and sometimes at night, you will constantly use it. It's like comfortable and uncomfortable shoes - you will immediately notice the difference.

Two Planets stores offer comfortable fitting rooms, qualified consultants and a wide range of nursing bras.

Should a breastfeeding mother sleep in a nursing bra?

Not at all necessary. This is recommended only if there is a lot of milk and it leaks at night. Then the bra is needed in order to put the liners into the cups. In principle, at night, the breast does not need the support of a bra, and its absence will not affect its shape, there is no likelihood of stretch marks or sagging of the breast due to its mass.

Sleeping in a nursing bra makes sense only when there is a lot of milk and it leaks. In this case, special inserts must be placed in the bra.

Do I need to wear a nursing bra all the time?

When you are upright - yes, always wear it. Nursing bra supports the breast, does not allow it to sag, helps to maintain the shape of the breast. The breast in a bra is at a higher level than without a bra, which means that milk will not stagnate in the lower sections of the breast, the likelihood of lactostasis (milk stagnation) is reduced. One obligatory condition (!) - a nursing bra must be chosen correctly in size, in no case should it pinch anything, should not press anywhere.
