Learn how to make SO EASY avocado puree for your baby—and the best way to prevent it from browning so you can store leftovers for later.

Avocado Puree

Avocado is a favorite first food for baby since it’s not very likely to be allergenic, has lots of healthy fats, and has a silky texture that’s great for new eaters. I love making avocado puree to share with baby since there’s no cooking involved and it’s so super easy to do with either a blender or a fork!

Ingredients You Need

To make this avocado puree, you’ll just need ripe avocado and a fresh lemon, if you plan to store some for later. So easy!

How to Choose a Perfect Avocado

Look for an avocado that’s firm to the touch but has a little give, which indicates ripeness. A very soft avocado may be too ripe with brown spots by the time you get it home and eat it. So it shouldn’t feel as hard as a rock, but firm with a little softness.

Step by Step Instructions

Here’s a look at the easy process involved in making this homemade baby food.

  1. Halve a ripe avocado, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh.
  2. Add to a blender.
  3. Blend, adding breastmilk, formula, or water if needed or desired to thin.
  4. Serve immediately.

TIP: This is a great puree to share with baby, so if you plan to have some, skip adding breastmilk or formula.

How to Store Avocado Puree for Later

To store in the fridge, place puree into small food storage containers and squeeze fresh lemon juice over top. You’ll want any exposed part of the puree to be in contact with some lemon juice to prevent browning.

To freeze, stir 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice into the mash and spoon into an ice cube tray. Freeze. Transfer frozen cubes into a freezer storage bag for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge in an airtight container. (You can also freeze directly in a freezer bag.)

Tips for Making the Best Avocado Puree

  • To do this with a fork, place as much or as little avocado onto a plate. Mash with a fork to reach the desired consistency, thinning with water, breastmilk or formula as desired.
  • To store in the fridge, place puree into small food storage containers and squeeze fresh lemon juice over top. You’ll want any exposed part of the puree to be in contact with some lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • To freeze, stir 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice into the mash and spoon into an ice cube tray. Freeze. Transfer frozen cubes into a freezer storage bag for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge in an airtight container. (You can also freeze directly in a freezer bag.)
  • Leave as a thicker mash for older babies.
  • Spread onto toast sticks (about the size of your finger) for BLW-style feeding or offer a preloaded spoon.
  • Mix with Banana Puree, Sweet Potato Puree, Pureed Beans, Apple Puree, or any other food you like.

Homemade Baby Food Recipes: Avocado Puree

By Anjali Shah on · Last Updated on

About 2 months ago, we gave Layla her first solid food: Avocado! Since then she has had a variety of fruits and veggies: Sweet potato, Butternut squash, Zucchini, Carrot, Fuji Apples, Plums, Pears, Bananas, Green Beans, Peas, Spinach, Broccoli, Pumpkin, Apricot… and we’ve also given her Oatmeal and Organic Whole Milk Plain Yogurt. She has turned into a wonderful eater! Gobbles up almost everything we give her (peas and green beans have to be disguised in yogurt with a little bit of pear, but then she downs them like you wouldn’t believe).

And since I’ve been making all of her food at home from scratch, I thought I’d start a Baby Food Recipes section on my blog!

I’ll be adding the baby food recipes in the order that we introduced them to Layla – to the extent that I can remember 🙂 Avocado was definitely first – because it was the easiest, and because it’s so nutritious for your little ones.

1/5th of an avocado has only 50 calories but 20 vitamins and minerals! Talk about nutrient dense. Avocados also contain:

  • Folate
  • Fiber
  • Potassium
  • Vitamin E
  • Iron
  • Healthy fats that help with brain and nervous system development

I mashed up the avocado raw, and fed it directly to her mixed with a little bit of breast milk (you can also mix it with formula or water to thin it out at first). Here’s how she reacted 🙂

The first time she was like “what are you giving me??” but soon she couldn’t get enough avocado. It’s definitely one of her favorites. And since avocado gets oxidized so easily, I actually tried freezing it and it worked great!

I used these Mumi & Bubi

ice cube trays for freezing. I love them because they come with a cover, a recipe book, and the cubes are super easy to get out. One ice cube = 1oz of food. And once I started making this puree in bulk, I used a Vitamix to puree large quantities of it at the same time – which was super convenient!

Also, if you can afford it, I’d recommend using 100% organic ingredients for your baby’s food. That way you can leave the peels on various fruits and veggies (e.g. you won’t have to peel apples and pears before pureeing them), and it’s much more nutritious for your baby.

Of course, there will be times when you’re on the go and need a healthy pre-made option for your little one. And in those cases, I’d recommend buying one of the pouches on my list of the healthiest baby food pouches!

Below is my recipe for super simple avocado: a perfect first food for babies!

If Serving Fresh / Immediately
  • Mash the avocado with a fork or blend it in a food processor.

  • Mix with breastmilk, formula or water to reach desired consistency.

If Freezing
  • Mash the avocado with a fork or blend it in a food processor.

  • Divide into ice cube trays, wrap/cover, and freeze.

  • Thaw in the fridge the night before use, or thaw by putting the ice cube in a bowl over a bowl of hot water on the counter to defrost.

Each ice cube = 1oz of food. Also, as your baby gets used to solids, you don't have to thin out the avocado at all.

Avocado baby food recipes | 2023

Avocados are considered a great first food for babies because each fruit (yes, avocados really are a fruit!) contains many beneficial nutrients for baby's health and well-being. Avocado puree for kids has a natural creamy taste and a mild flavor that makes it perfect. No complicated equipment is needed to make avocado baby food, just a few simple kitchen tools and you're done! nine0003

Avocado Health Benefits Avocado for baby is a smart choice because one serving of avocado baby food is high in essential vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that are valuable for baby's growth and development.

When can children eat avocados? Because avocado has a mild flavor and creamy texture, it may be one of the first foods given to a child. Avocado baby food is usually recommended as the first baby food because of its nutrient dense properties, smooth taste, and ease of preparation. Avocado baby food can be given when the baby is at least 4 months old. nine0003

How to make avocado baby food

How to choose a ripe avocado? When buying ripe avocado baby food fruits, choose one with a dark, firm surface that is slightly soft to the touch. Avoid overly hard or overly soft avocados. If you can't find a perfectly ripe avocado, choose a firmer one and leave it at home in a brown paper bag for a day or two. Forget high-tech gadgets for this avocado baby food recipe. There is no need to cook, steam, or mix in this method of making baby avocados. All you need is a few common kitchen tools. nine0003

Step 3 of how to prepare avocado for baby food for the first feeding: mash the avocado until smooth without slices, using the back of a fork or potato press. If you want to dilute the consistency of avocado baby food, add a small amount of breast milk or formula. Continue adding liquid and puree until you reach your desired consistency. When you first feed avocado baby food (4 to 6 months of age), the mixture should be smooth and watery, reminiscent of breast milk. When a baby is 6 to 8 months old, avocado baby formula can be thick and creamy, with the consistency of yogurt. nine0003

Step 4 of How to Make Avocado Baby Food for an Older Child: For the avocado finger food, cut the flesh of the avocado into bite-sized pieces (half-inch cubes) on a cutting board and immediately give.

Can you freeze avocado baby food?

It is absolutely safe to freeze pureed avocados, but you must take into account the color change along with a slight change in texture when the meat is exposed to air. If you have added breast milk or formula to your avocado baby food puree, do not freeze it. After defrosting avocado baby food, add liquids. If frozen, use avocado baby food within one month. nine0003
