Power was restored in parts of Cuba after Hurricane Ian hit the western tip of the island and completely cut off the country's power supply. Two people were reported dead and buildings were damaged across the country. On Wednesday evening, a hurricane hit the US state of Florida, where about a million residents were left without electricity, floods began in cities.
Cuban authorities began to gradually restore electricity to the eastern regions by Wednesday morning, but warned that the process would be more difficult in the west of the island. In the morning, the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mining announced that power had been restored in three regions, while work was ongoing in others.
In addition, US authorities said they were conducting a search operation at sea after a ship carrying 23 migrants was believed to have sunk near Cuba during a hurricane.
De-energized island
As the Cuban government reported earlier, the country's largest thermal power plant, Antonio Guiteras, was out of order due to the Ian strike. It was not possible to promptly turn it on, and the island was completely de-energized: 11 million people were left without electricity.

The Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant is located in Matanzas, 100 km east of Havana, and is the most important in Cuba. Its shutdown meant that electricity was completely stopped on the island.

Mayelin Suarez, a Pinar del Río resident, said Monday night, when the storm hit, was the darkest of her life. "We almost lost the roof of our house," she told Reuters. "My husband and daughter tied it with a rope so that it wouldn't fly away."
Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel visited the province and promised on Twitter that the country would "overcome adversity."
Florida - next
Ian hit Florida on Wednesday afternoon and caused flooding in the southwestern city of Naples. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the hurricane was causing extreme damage to infrastructure, however, according to his observations, the water level has already reached a maximum.
According to the US weather services, by 17:00 local time, the water level in Naples rose to 2.74 meters, which significantly exceeded forecasts.
About 2 million people in Florida are now without electricity. More than 2,000 flights have been cancelled.
Power grids are damaged by strong winds that cause power lines to fall. However, an even greater danger is flooding caused by storm surge.
"The Gulf of Mexico is practically moving ashore - across the beaches and into residential areas," says Eric Salna of the International Hurricane Center. "This water intrusion is hard to imagine until you see it in real life." The expert adds that floods tend to kill more people than wind, and the influx caused by Ian was "the worst possible."

It was previously thought that Ian could hit the densely populated area of Tampa, where a similar incident last occurred in 1921. However, in fact, the blow fell somewhat to the south.
Ian was about 125 km offshore at 0500 local time (0900 GMT) when the National Hurricane Center announced that it had become a Category 4 hurricane. This means extreme danger: according to forecasts, wind speeds can reach 240 km / h.

Florida's governor declared a state of emergency across Florida over the weekend and deployed 5,000 National Guard troops.
Director of the Institute for Extreme Events at Florida International University, Richard Olson, expressed concern about the lack of evacuation. More than 2.5 million Florida residents in a number of coastal cities began evacuating, and in some areas, police went door to door and asked people to leave their homes.
