What Is Patreon? Everything You Need to Know

  • Patreon lets people financially support and reward content creators — such as podcasters, writers, and YouTubers — through a monthly subscription.
  • Creators can set up multiple membership tiers with various rewards so each subscriber can choose the amount of money they feel most comfortable giving to a project.
  • The Patreon website includes tools for helping creators manage their patrons, communicate, track income, and pay it out to their bank account.

Patreon is a membership platform that connects content creators with fans and supporters. Mainly, it offers financial tools that let supporters subscribe to projects that give creators a predictable income stream as they continue to create content.

The platform is a modern take on the classic concept of patronage. Historically, artists such as painters, musicians, and authors sometimes relied on wealthy donors' patronage to finance their work. Patreon takes that core concept and enables a much larger audience to finance artists and creators they like at affordable monthly rates. Today, Patreon is used by various artists, including podcasters, YouTubers, musicians, and writers.

Unlike crowdfunding services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that allow people to help fund products and services that don't yet exist, Patreon is for content that's already being created and published. The intention is to give artists a sustainable income while rewarding patrons with additional content or other rewards at various subscription levels.

Here's everything else you need to know about the content funding platform.

How Patreon membership tiers work

Patreon enables creators to establish multiple membership tiers. The number of tiers and the subscription rate at each level is left up to the creator. This can encourage casual fans to pay a low rate – perhaps as little as $1 per month – while more dedicated followers can subscribe upwards of $10 or $20 per month. Higher tiers grant funders access to premium and exclusive content not otherwise available for supporters at lower levels.

Tiers are both flexible and optional. Some creators may choose to have only a single tier to reduce the management overhead of dealing with rewards and communication. Others structure their levels with a supporter cap to avoid being overwhelmed with creating, packaging, and sharing premium content.

How the Patreon platform and website work

Patreon helps creators manage their projects via the website. Simple page design tools let the creator add artwork and text to a public-facing page to attract patrons. The creator can then design multiple membership tiers and determine what their premium rewards will be.

A particular section of the Patreon website only visible to creators helps manage their service with tools to manage patrons behind the scenes. Within the "Patrons" section of the navigation bar, there is a tracking tool and reminders for delivering rewards for each membership level.

It also features a chat and email tool for communicating with patrons. Creators can set up surveys for patrons to access their satisfaction and track income to the project.

By default, Patreon only "pays out" on request, so as a creator, you can track your balance within the Patreon website and disperse earnings to your bank account when desired.

90,000 Patreons accused of posting sexual content with children. The site denied the accusations

Users accused Patreon of posting materials with sexual content with children. The reason was several accounts on the platform that sold photos of young girls in bathing suits. One viral TikTok called for the US Department of Justice to investigate. The company denied all accusations, calling them conspiracy theories. The situation was described in detail by Vice, we are retelling the material. nine0003

The accusations against Patreon began circulating in March, but this week they have again become widely discussed. This came after the company laid off five security personnel. In August, someone who claimed to be part of the service's security team posted a report claiming that Patreon was ignoring complaints about accounts with indecent pictures of children. Rumors began to circulate on Twitter and TikTok after the employees were laid off that this was due to the report and problems with children's content. nine0003

Patreon itself said that these things are not connected in any way. The report submitted by the user was called a fraud there, emphasizing that they are absolutely intolerant of the sexualization of children and adolescents. If the service policy is violated, the platform will delete any user and all content related to him that violates the requirements, the company noted. Regarding layoffs, a Patreon spokesman said that most of the internal engineers working on security have not lost their jobs.

According to Vice, the accusations made by users are based on two types of content they found on the platform. The first belongs to "family vloggers" who shared photos of their children. The second is shots of an adult model acting like a minor. This genre of content for adults is called Ageplay ("age game").

Vice got acquainted with the model's account. It offered for sale photosets with images of a young girl in swimsuits and in various poses. The content of the account has been marked as 18+. The publication clarifies that Patreon requires adult content creators to provide documents confirming that the account holder and all people appearing in his materials have reached the age of majority. However, the model account that outraged users was removed from Patreon this summer for repeatedly violating rules against the sexualization of children. A similar story happened with the girl's profiles on YouTube and Instagram. nine0003

Another account that was the basis for the allegations contains photos of a young girl in swimsuits on the beach. The owner of this profile also maintains a "family channel" on YouTube, where he documents his daily life and recreation with relatives, including children. As noted by Vice, Patreon allows content with minors that is not intentionally sexualized and that is not shared for sexual gratification. Minors are allowed on the platform only with the consent of an adult. However, the very type of "family content" has often faced accusations of child exploitation in recent years and therefore remains controversial. nine0003

Separately, the publication indicates the rules regarding nudity on Patreon. Pictures of naked bodies are allowed per se, but pornography is not allowed. By the latter, the site means "real people participating in sexual activities, such as masturbation or sexual intercourse on camera. "

In 2020, Pornhub faced accusations of distributing sexual content to children. The New York Times article described several cases where videos with the participation of minors made their way to the site. Then the publication caused a wide resonance in society; Visa and Mastercard have banned the use of their cards for payments on Pornhub. nine0003

At first, Pornhub called statements about the use of materials with minors false and irresponsible, but later they changed the policy - they prohibited unverified users from uploading videos and downloading videos, and also introduced biometric identification. All content posted by unverified users has been removed by the site.
