        Koppala District Hospital
Three VLBW girls, Renuki Hadapad, are saved using the kangaroo method. In October 2017, they celebrated their first birthday with their families.

her husband worked. After 28 days, the girls - Mahadevi, Shrushti and Lakshmi - were discharged from the hospital.

However, there are new problems at home. The kangaroo method is only effective if used for a long time until the child weighs more than 2500 grams and no longer wants to be limited to skin-to-skin contact. And finding time for three children is not an easy task.

        \n

A team of local health workers kept Renuka's spirits high. And then, since her husband was working, she moved to her sister's house. Both women provided at least nine hours of skin-to-skin contact for each girl daily for over 4 months.

        \n

On March 7, 2017, each girl's weight exceeded 2500 grams.

        \n

"So the kangaroo method helped save these three very low birth weight girls," said Dr. Dhan Reddy, Koppal's chief medical officer.

Use the kangaroo method immediately after birth

        \n

With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WHO is working in three districts in India and 14 districts in Ethiopia to scale up the use of the kangaroo method. Through training of health workers, policies to create an enabling environment and improved infrastructure, WHO aims to ensure that the kangaroo method is applied to at least 80% of low birth weight children in community health facilities. One year after the start of the program, coverage has increased from almost 0% to over 40%.

In most parts of the world, the kangaroo method begins 3-10 days after birth, by which time there are already many deaths among preterm and low birth weight infants. WHO is also coordinating a research initiative in several countries, such as Ghana, India, Malawi, Nigeria and Tanzania, to test the survival benefits of the kangaroo method immediately after birth.

        \n

“I appreciate the work being done to scale up the kangaroo method,” says Dr Henk Bekedam, WHO Representative in India. “If it turns out that the immediate application of the kangaroo method is effective in reducing mortality, it will help many other families, as it helped Renuka and her triplets.

        First birthday

        \n

Renuka and her family will remember October 30, 2017. The administration of the Koppala District Hospital, where the triplets were born, together with local partners - the Government of Karnataka, the National Academy of Medical Sciences of St. John and the Karnataka Health Foundation - organized a celebration of their first birthday.

“Do not discriminate against girls. It's a gift,” says Renuka, talking about the changes that have taken place this year. Along with his wife, Somappa appreciates the support received to rescue and care for his daughters.

        \n

Today, Renuka advocates for the Kangaroo Method in her area and encourages parents to not only use the method, but also to take care of their girls.

When Renuka Hadapad gave birth to triplets in Koppala, India, on October 25, 2016, she had no reason to be happy. All newborns were girls. Renuka and her husband Somappa, who already had two daughters, hoped to have a son as their culture favors male children.

Moreover, despite a trouble-free delivery at the district hospital, each girl weighed less than 1500 grams, making it difficult to feed, maintain proper body temperature and gain weight. Although Somappa and Renuka were very upset, the newborn girls needed their support to survive.

WHO recommends kangaroo or continuous skin-to-skin contact between mother and low birth weight or preterm infants and exclusive breastfeeding immediately after birth.

Warm mothers for long periods of time

At first, Renuka had no attachment to the tiny triplets, but hospital staff working on a WHO research program to scale up the kangaroo method in India convinced her of the need for her effort .

WHO promotes the Kangaroo method in India.

“Thanks to the care and support of the district hospital staff, I felt at home,” says Renuka, who took care of the triplets tirelessly while her husband worked. After 28 days, the girls - Mahadevi, Shrushti and Lakshmi - were discharged from the hospital.

However, new problems have arisen at home. The kangaroo method is only effective if used for a long time until the child weighs more than 2500 grams and no longer wants to be limited to skin-to-skin contact. And finding time for three children is not an easy task.

A team of local health workers did not let Renuka lose heart. And then, since her husband was working, she moved to her sister's house. Both women provided at least nine hours of skin-to-skin contact for each girl daily for over 4 months.

Russian scientists have come closer to understanding the nature of the chemical and isotopic heterogeneity of the Earth's mantle

Scientists have studied igneous rocks - basalt glasses - of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and obtained new information important for understanding the scale and causes of the chemical and isotopic heterogeneity of the Earth's mantle. They concluded that the interaction of magmatic and hydrothermal systems in the axial zones of mid-ocean ridges may be the main mechanism leading to variations in the isotopic composition of noble gases and nitrogen in basalt glasses. The study was conducted by scientists of the V. I. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry (GEOKHI RAS) subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
