Family recipes: the beginning of the journey
Henry John Heinz was born in 1844 near Pittsburgh. From early childhood, the boy began to help his mother by working in the garden. From the age of 15, he was already cultivating his own small plot, and his mother taught him to make pickles and marinades from the grown vegetables according to traditional family recipes. Henry had a motto - "Do ordinary things extraordinarily well.
" In 1869, together with his friend Clarence Nobel, he created a company for the production of vegetable preparations. Their first product was grated horseradish from Henry's mother's recipe. Entrepreneurs took an innovative step for their time - Heinz & Noble vegetable preparations were packed in transparent glass vessels. This allowed people to see the product they were buying. Slowly, the company's products won state after state.
The UK was the first overseas market for Heinz products. In 1905, in the wake of success and great sales, he built a factory in the British city of Peckham. In 1906, Heinz organized an unusual tasting system in the country's large stores at that time. Buyers before paying for the goods could try it, which was new. In addition, Heinz also gave away samples of the product for free.
Henry Heinz died of pneumonia in 1919. He left behind an international multinational corporation, whose capitalization today is approaching 50 billion dollars.
“I have always competed only with housewives, trying to ensure that factory-made pickles and marinades are in no way inferior to those prepared in the family kitchen,” he said.
Ketchup
The year 1876 is considered the year of Heinz ketchup. In 1896, The New York Times called ketchup "American national condiment", and Heinz received the unspoken title of "King of Ketchup". The businessman has always emphasized that his ketchup is made from 100% natural ingredients without the addition of preservatives.
The main ingredient is a special kind of tomato that makes ketchup thick. Since 1936, a special division of the Heinz Seed company has been engaged in the selection of tomato seeds. In 2013, Brazilian investment fund 3G Capital, along with billionaire Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Corporation, bought Heinz for $28 billion. The deal was one of the largest in the history of the food industry.
Brands
In addition to ketchup, the company produces sauces, mayonnaise, canned vegetables, ready meals and baby food.
They are sold in more than 50 countries around the world.
In 2015, the new Kraft Heinz Company was born as a result of the merger between Kraft Foods and Heinz. The portfolio includes brands such as Heinz, Kraft, Oscar Mayer and many others. In Russia, the company's first acquisition was the Ivanovo Baby Food Plant (trademarks Umnitsa and Sami s Usami). The company in the Russian Federation is also represented by such brands as: Mechta Mistress, Picador, My Family, Derevenskoye, Lea&Perrins.
Kraft Heinz will reduce its presence in Russia in the near future. The company said it was preparing to part ways with its baby food business. Two factories and local brands "Themselves with a mustache" and "Umnitsa" are put up for sale. Kraft Heinz can make a deal with the Chernogolovka group of companies.
Logo
Since 1896, the company has been using the slogan "57 Varieties" ("57 species", by the way, this is also a registered trademark), despite the fact that there were more than sixty items in the assortment.
According to one version, the number "57" was chosen as lucky.
It became the first and only logo of the company, the number is now placed on the labels of all products manufactured under the Heinz brand. By the way, Heinz was the first to use neon advertising by placing a product logo on it. Now, to involve customers in the development of packaging design, the company periodically holds The Heinz Ketchup Creativity Contest, the works of the winners then decorate millions of bottles.
Patents
In 1882 the company patented a trapezoidal glass bottle with a label at the neck, and in 1890 its octagonal counterpart appeared on store shelves. The firm also had patent disputes.
So, in 2012, Scott White filed a lawsuit against Heinz in the Chicago District Court. He claimed that the company used his patent to produce a ketchup package that allows you to simultaneously squeeze ketchup onto sandwiches and dip food into the sauce. Such a package from Heinz was called "Dip & Squeeze" ("dip and squeeze").
