About 47-48% of Russians prefer not to buy baby food and diapers from private label retailers, according to a Nielsen study. "Consumers in other countries of the world do not share the Russians' wariness regarding private labels: if in Russia almost half of the respondents do not buy private labels in the diaper category, the global average is 16%, in the North America region - 9%, in Europe - 28%" , the report says.

Similar discrepancies in consumer preferences are observed in the categories of baby food. The Russian market of baby food in the first half of 2015 grew in real terms by 2% year on year, and the share of private label in it was 8% due to the growth in sales of such products by 1%, Nielsen notes.

"The growth rate of private label sales is lower than the growth rate of the market, so the words of consumers about distrust of private labels in baby food can be considered reliable," the company's analysts explain. A different situation has developed in the diaper market, which in real terms grew by 8% in half a year, while the share of its own brands in it rose from 2.5% to 6.5%. "Growth was driven by lower private label prices, which are on average 30% cheaper than their branded counterparts, and increased distribution through hypermarkets and specialty stores," explains Nielsen.
