A Unique Formulation with Optimum Nutrition for Baby Parrots
A long-time favourite among parrot breeders and aviculturists alike, the Hand-Feeding Formula is a result of industry-leading research and development at HARI. Parrot breeders worldwide have grown to trust Tropican Hand-Feeding Formula for providing their baby birds with all the essential nutrients necessary for excellent growth and brilliant plumage. The Hand-Feeding Formula is a finely ground up form of the High Performance biscuits. This is to include the benefits of high temperature extrusion cooking such as gelatinization of the starches which improves the water holding properties of the formula, destruction of field bacteria, and easier digestion.
Tropican’s advanced Hand-Feeding Formula delivers all the nutritional potency that makes it a leading baby parrot food. It’s an excellent peanut-derived source of fat and protein, as well as a source of essential grains that complement amino acid profiles, all critical to the proper growth and well-being of parrot chicks from hatch through the fledgling age. A rich source of Omega fatty acids from flaxseed, peanuts and sunflower seeds, Tropican makes feathers shine and helps support a healthy body.
Proudly Canadian Made
We are very proud of Tropican’s outstanding 30+ year tradition of raising thousands of parrots over several generations at HARI. At a time when most bird food companies have shut their research centers, HARI continues its ongoing work on the research and development of advanced bird nutrition. In fact, HARI is the longest-standing research facility dedicated to studying the care and breeding of parrots.
Tropican uses only the freshest grains and legumes from the most recent crops.
Ingredients are sourced locally, which means consumers get fresher food faster. In addition, the fact that it’s now made in close geographical proximity to HARI, located in Rigaud, means quicker turnaround times for final HARI quality assurance approvals and enhanced freshness-to-market efficiencies.

Feeding Guide
Administration of food with a feeding syringe is recommended provided you are confident of the proper technique to be used. Use a separate syringe for each clutch. If you are not confident with syringe feeding, a spoon bent on either side can also be used.
- Place syringe tip slightly into left side of beak with one hand. Pressure should be placed on the Beak’s commissures with the fingers of the other hand and palm of hand held behind the head of chick, preventing the syringe to injure the mouth when chick will react with a feeding response.
- When bird gives feeding response (head pumping), start feeding and aim towards the back right side of the mouth. Close monitoring of chick response and respiration is essential to prevent aspiration. Fill crop without excess stretching.
- A daily weight monitoring and amount fed chart should be kept for health growth parameters and future reference. Allow crop to completely empty between feedings.
- A bent teaspoon may also be used to slowly drip food into beak. Metal feeding tubes are not recommended, as they can pierce the crop and esophagus, allowing food to leak out.
Can be fed dry to lories, finches, canaries and other small species as food supplement.
- Lories: Feed the formula as a dry powder in a separate bowl. A second bowl may contain some diced fruits mixed with Prime and the formula however make sure the birds first are eating the dry food. Some sugar can be mixed up to 10 % with the formula to get the lories to start eating it, but discontinue this once the birds are eating the food. On a liquid diet of simple sugars, lories are sensitive to bacterial gut infections thus feeding exclusively a dry powder such as Tropican Hand-feeding Formula is not only easier but also leads to better health.
- Finches, canaries and other small species: As a dry powder in a separate bowl during stress, moulting, and breeding.
Formula Preparation
Mix hot water with correct volume (see chart below) of Tropican Hand-Feeding Formula (alternatively, use cold water and microwave). CAUTION: Always mix food completely and beware of hot spots.
Because of Tropican’s beneficial gelatinization properties, it will take a minute to fully moisturize with water. Therefore, fine tuning the consistency is advised. Simply add a little bit more water if needed.
Final temperature should be slightly above body temperature (38°C-100°F) and should never be fed to chicks in excess of 40.5°C (105°F). An accurate, calibrated thermometer should always be used to verify the desired temperature. Overheated food can burn delicate mouth, throat and crop tissues. The suggested brooder temperature (see chart below) should be used as a guideline for keeping chicks at proper temperature.
Tropican Hand-Feeding Formula for Baby Parrots is a complete diet. Do not dilute this food with other baby foods or its complete dietary balance will be lost, and the mixture may become deficient in vital nutrients.
MAKE A FRESH BATCH OF FORMULA FOR EACH FEEDING. ALWAYS USE CLEAN UTENSILS AND ACCURATE MEASURES.
Baby Age (days) | Hot Water to Dry Formula Ratio | Baby Brooder Guideline Temperature | |
0-2 | 90% / 10% | 35.5°C – 36.5°C | 96°F – 98°F |

I have successfully used this on baby doves, chickens and finches as early as one day old, so what is in this baby bird food that makes it formulated for hookbills?
Answer by

The Baby Formula contains probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes to ensure healthy digestion and a balanced, high- nutrient formula that helps babies grow faster, wean earlier and develop better plumage.
Is it good for baby sparrows
Answer by
Chewy•
Jul 07, 2019
This food can be used with baby sparrows.
Hi for how long I can feed my bird with this?
Answer by
Chewy•
May 20, 2021
Weaning age will vary depending on the individual bird species so it is best to research your species. To encourage the weaning process, exact Conversion diets should be offered when "exploration" begins. When the baby bird is fully feathered, offer exact Conversion diet, or an adult daily diet of exact Natural food or exact Rainbow food in a clean food cup, in addition to routine hand feeding. The baby bird will slowly begin to prefer these new forms of the food. Fresh water must be provided at all times. Prolonged use of hand feeding formula beyond the normal weaning age, or excessive feeding, may result in health concerns. A chick will lose up to 10% of its body weight during weaning as it begins to eat on its own. Birds wean easily onto exact Conversion diets or exact adult daily diets because of compatible taste and ingredients.

formula helpful for omnivores too
Rgregarding other reviews as to not for wild birds or, not for starlings… yes starlings need approx 33%. Protein, but add protein to this, or rather ,add This to protein , as it has the -biotics and enzymes that can help. Wit h any bird consider complete nutritional needs. And consider the specific situation, we don’t always have access to the exact ingredients we want. So we do our best with what we have available.

Not appropriate for ALL baby birds - Insectivorous or Omnivorous Wild birds.
Hi there, Baby Starlings & Sparrows need a baby diet high in animal protein. Yes as adults they also eat seed but to develop as nestlings & fledglings they need a diet 33% and higher in animal protein. Kaytee is only 22% protein and its from plants. Your rescue baby starling and sparrow needs more than that. Check back of cat or dog biscuits - first ingredient needs to be chicken and check the percentage of protein. Soak in hot water and mush it up completely like porridge so the baby doesn't have blockages in its corp when you feed it. Needs calcium and bird vitamins as well, not just protein but that will get you far!. I do recommend Kaytee for Pet Parrots etc and the ones that it mentions on the back of the package.

No sugar added!
I haven’t used this yet, but it was the only hand feeding formula that has good mixing consistency (per reviews) that surprisingly does not contain added sugar! Though I have read many people complaining about Kaytee in general, their formula is as complete as you could hope for considering today’s pet-feeding standards, and is not grainy like Harrison’s, and a fraction of the price.
Food composition for parrots and canaries
Bird feeding
August 26, 2016
33313
Ready complete bird food is not only convenient (because you do not have to spend time preparing dinner for your pet), but also very useful. The composition of good feed includes all the necessary elements for a healthy and happy life of birds, which also have a positive effect on the quality of plumage and make the coloring brighter. In our article, we will talk about the main components on which diets for birds are based, and about the beneficial effects on the body of each of them.
At a first glance at the composition of complete feeds, one can note the variety of components included in it. This is due to the natural needs of birds, because in nature they constantly move from place to place and eat a variety of foods. In order to fully satisfy this need in home conditions, balanced feeds have been developed.
The basis of the bird's diet is always cereals, and good balanced feeds include 8 or more different types of seeds. As a rule, about 70% of them are vital for the bird, and the other 30% are healthy treats that contribute to the health of the pet and increase the palatability of the feed.
Standard seed set:
-
Oats are a real storehouse of useful elements. It improves digestion, cleanses the blood, promotes the proper functioning of the liver, strengthens the nervous system and the body as a whole, and provides an anti-inflammatory effect. Birds are very fond of oats, but in excessive amounts it can cause weight gain. This problem is eliminated thanks to balanced diets, because. the content of oats in them is strictly limited.
-
Millet (yellow, white, red, common) - seeds with a delicate taste, the richest source of protein. In terms of protein content, millet is superior to rice, corn, pearl barley and buckwheat, in addition, birds eat it much better. Millet supports the proper functioning of the cardiovascular, digestive and other systems, removes toxins, strengthens the immune system and keeps the body in good shape, and also promotes rapid recovery after illnesses.
-
Flax seeds are enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, which not only promote proper digestion, but also participate in the formation of bird plumage, making it even healthier and more beautiful.
-
Canary - useful for absolutely all types of birds. It contains a large amount of vitamins and minerals involved in the formation and proper functioning of all body systems.
-
Abyssinian nougat (niger) is one of the main sources of amino acids - the primary sources of life that promote protein absorption.
-
Hemp seed is a source of high quality proteins that stimulates the reproduction process in young birds.
As treats that increase the palatability of the feed, the following are most often used:
-
Anise seeds are a source of minerals.
-
Sweet dill is a natural source of vitamins and esters, which also improves digestion and prevents gas formation.
-
Safflower, useful for indigestion and constipation, as well as improving color.
-
Perilla, which strengthens the immune system and stimulates fertility, etc.
Of course, these are not all the components found in the feed, but some of the main ones.
Do not forget that in addition to balanced feeds, fruits, vegetables and herbs must be included in the bird's diet. However, this is by no means the main, but an additional food, which is offered in limited quantities, rather, as a treat. You can use both fresh products and ready-made treats for birds (from apples, kiwi, coconuts, oranges, etc.). In the first case, there is a risk of making a mistake with the choice of food and offering the bird inappropriate vegetables and fruits, which will have unpleasant consequences. Therefore, with natural feeding, it is necessary to strictly follow the recommendations. Ready-made delicacies significantly facilitate the task and are more useful, because. include not only pieces of fruits, vegetables and greens, but also other useful elements (safflower, corn flakes, etc.).
It is also important that the seeds that are part of the finished feed and treats for birds are enriched with essential oils, which are effective helpers in the prevention of various diseases.
Choose the right food, and let your pets be healthy!

How to choose a good food for a parrot
When choosing a food for a parrot, the owner needs to consider different criteria. First of all, the breed and age of the bird. As we have already said, manufacturers produce different feed formulations. There are special mixtures for chicks and adults, for small, medium and large breeds. These are the first parameters for choosing food for an exotic feathered pet.
Other selection criteria:
1. The composition is natural, balanced, without harmful additives and dyes.
2. Feed assignment. For daily feeding, complete feeds are purchased. It is advisable to choose a product with a multicomponent composition of ingredients, they are most useful for birds. As a top dressing, you can choose food from the category "additional food", as well as delicious treats that are served to birds as a treat.
3. It is better to give preference to foods from trusted manufacturers, whose products have many positive reviews from experienced breeders of exotic birds.
4. Packing volume. The larger it is, the more profitable the cost of the product.
5. Expiry date. Do not feed the feathered inhabitant with an expired mixture.
How much food should be given per day
The average daily allowance for parrots of small breeds is 20-25 g of grain mixture, medium - 30-35 g, large - 40-50 g. Exotic birds have a very fast metabolism, so food and water should always be freely available. The feeder should be filled daily, in the morning. Throughout the day, the parrot will eat this food, and uneaten leftovers should be discarded and replaced with a new portion.
In addition to food, during the day you can give your parrot vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs and other healthy foods, but without fanaticism. It is impossible to overfeed the birds, this will lead to obesity and various health problems. Natural products should not be left in the cage for a long time, as they can quickly deteriorate.
