Dog nutrition is the basis of its health. Do not rely on advertising or recommendations from friends. Each animal is individual, which means it requires a personal approach to nutrition. In order for the dog to be healthy, beautiful and happy, it is important to take into account all the nuances.

Types of dry dog ​​food

There is a huge variety of dry complete dog food available today. It is easy to get confused in such a variety. All feeds are divided into the following categories:

• Economy class. This is cheap dog food. They are based on not always healthy products - meat production waste, offal, bone and vegetable meal, fats, various additives that create a feeling of satiety. As well as flavoring additives that are addictive. The advantage of this food is its price. But the lack of natural meat and other nutritional components for a dog is not at all useful.
• Premium. Steady "medium" is much more useful for dogs than cheap. The amount of meat, natural meat products here is approximately 30%. The rest is by-products, cereals, cereals, vegetables. The number of useless fillers that cause a feeling of satiety, but do not carry any benefit, is minimal. However, some manufacturers add flavor enhancers, which, again, are addictive. They are unlikely to harm adult dogs, but puppies should not be given this.
• Super premium class and holistics. This is the most expensive food, consisting entirely of natural products in the optimal ratio for the dog. The basis of such food is pure meat (or poultry, fish - depending on the specific line of tastes). Natural cereals, cereals, vegetables and fats are also added in the correct ratio for the animal. Often such feeds are enhanced with vitamin, mineral supplements, medicinal herbs, berries, etc. There are no artificial additives.

Another classification implies the following division of food:

• For everyday nutrition. All-purpose food suitable for all healthy dogs.
• Specialized. Take into account the individual characteristics of animals. They are produced for special categories of dogs: pregnant, lactating, elderly, puppies, neutered, as well as for certain breeds that require a special approach to nutrition.
• Medical. Feed for animals with chronic diseases - joints, hair, eyes, urinary system, obesity.

Based on this, there is food for absolutely any category of dogs.

What to consider when choosing

To choose the right food for your dog, you need to consider the following criteria:

• Breed. Feeding a shepherd dog and a toy terrier, for example, requires a different approach. Due to breed characteristics, all dogs have different needs for the same substances. On universal feeds, it is usually indicated which breeds they are suitable for - small, medium, large.
• Lifestyle and activity. Breed and personal temperament leave an imprint on the dog's lifestyle. Like people, there are more energetic and more lazy ones. The more active an animal is, the more calories and nutrients it needs.
• Period of life. Age is another criterion. The calorie, vitamin and mineral requirements of puppies and older dogs are different. The needs of pregnant, lactating females also differ.
• State of health. In case of health problems, chronic diseases, it is necessary to feed the animal with therapeutic food. It should be recommended by a veterinarian based on an accurate diagnosis, after examination and analysis. It is absolutely impossible to prescribe medicated food on your own, because it seems to you that the dog is sick with something!
• Fertility. Neutering/neutering a dog makes changes to its feeding.

The characteristics of the food itself must also be considered. This concerns the hardness and size of the granules. The smaller the dog, the smaller the pieces should be. Large and hard it will be difficult for her to gnaw. And vice versa - representatives of large breeds are fed with large-sized food.

How to determine if the food is good

The classification that divides food into economy, premium and super-premium classes is conditional and is not regulated at the legislative level. Therefore, the inscriptions on the pack remain on the conscience of the manufacturer. It is also a mistake to focus solely on the price. The most expensive does not mean the highest quality. And there are inexpensive feeds, consisting exclusively of natural ingredients.

What you need to focus on first of all is the composition:

• The component that is listed first in the composition list is predominant in volume. Therefore, food, where cereals and cereals are in the first place, are not very useful for dogs. It is better to choose those with the most meat.
• You also need to pay attention to the wording. For example, "animal products" in the composition can be almost anything, as well as "animal protein". Doubts about the composition are caused by components labeled as “chicken” or “lamb”. What part is meant? Meat or just skin, cartilage? Good quality ingredients are clearly and transparently listed: “fresh lamb meat”, “dehydrated chicken meat”, “duck meat meal”, etc.
• Herbal ingredients are not all equally beneficial for dogs. For example, “plant-derived protein” is a dubious wording. It is also worth refusing to feed, where one or another vegetable gluten is added. If the composition includes vegetable oils, it should be indicated which ones: linseed, olive, etc.
• Various dubious additives in the composition are unlikely to be useful for the animal, especially if there are too many of them. Technological additives, for example, increasing the shelf life of the product, are in any feed. However, you need to look at the ratio of "incomprehensible words" and natural ingredients.

The composition of the food should start with meat ingredients and contain as few vague formulations as possible. Only a specific indication of specific products. In this case, you can count on the fact that the food is good and will only benefit the dog.
