Cauliflower Puree is a great first food for babies. However, this delicious puree shouldn't be limited in this way. Stir it through sauces for an extra veggie hit or add a little butter, seasoning and thyme to turn it into a silky and creamy side dish.
Due to its versatility, cauliflower is often used to replace meat, grains and flour. (e.g cauliflower rice, cauliflower nuggets, pizza bases, gnocchi & cauliflower steaks).
Pureeing cauliflower has also become popular to use as a replacement for mashed potatoes or to stir into meals as a veggie boost.
How to Choose a Cauliflower
When buying a cauliflower look for one that
- Is creamy white in colour and blemish-free
- Has firm and densely packed florets
- Feels heavy for its size
- Has fresh green leaves.
How to Make Cauliflower Puree
As the nutrients in cauliflower are water-soluble they can leach into the water during cooking. For this reason, it is best to cook the cauliflower in as little water as possible, doing this also avoids the cauliflower becoming waterlogged.
- Prepare: Remove base and outer leaves, wash and chop into small pieces. The more evenly sized the pieces are, the more evenly they will cook. However, don’t stress out about it too much as overcooking isn't a problem.
- Cook: Place the chopped cauliflower in a pan with approx ¾ cup of boiling water. Simmer, covered, for around 10 minutes, or until tender. The smaller you chop your cauliflower the faster it will cook. I chopped approx 0.5-1cm thick.
- Blend: Puree until smooth adding ¼ cup of the cooking liquid (or baby milk) until desired consistency is reached. You can blend in a food processor, high-speed blender or with an immersion (stick) blender. Alternatively, you can mash for a more rustic, chunky texture.
If making as a family side dish, rather than a baby puree, when blending add butter, salt and lemon juice to taste.
Cauliflower Puree for Babies
Cauliflower puree is excellent mixed with other vegetables, grains and proteins. Try mixing it with
- Broccoli Puree
- Carrot Puree
- Pea Puree
- Sweet Potato Puree
- Pumpkin Puree
- Brown rice
- Pasta and cheese sauce
- Quinoa and cheese sauce
- Lentils
- Salmon
- Chicken
Other Uses for Cauliflower Puree
- Side Dish: Blend with butter, salt and seasoning for a tasty side dish. It works with most dishes you would serve with mashed potatoes, such as; chicken, steak, lamb, fish or scallops.
- Veggie Boost: Add to smoothies, sauces or baked goods as a great way to get more vegetables into your family's diet. Remember it is always good to celebrate the vegetable rather than trying to hide it or sneak it in, let your child see how versatile vegetables can be!
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate: Allow to cool, place in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to two days.
- Freeze: Allow to cool, spoon the puree into ice-cube trays and freeze until solid. Once they’re fully frozen, quickly pop them all out and place the frozen cubes into a freezer bag or container and return to the freezer. Thaw overnight in your refrigerator.

Cauliflower Puree
Cauliflower Puree is a great first food for babies. However, this delicious puree shouldn’t be limited in this way. Stir it through sauces for an extra veggie hit or add a little butter and lemon to turn it into a silky and creamy side dish.
Print Recipe Pin Recipe
- ▢
Food Processor, Blender or Immersion (stick) blender
- ▢ 1 Medium Cauliflower
- ▢ 180ml (¾ cup) Water
Extra ingredients if making as a side dish
- ▢ 42g (3 tbsp) Butter
- ▢ 1 tsp Salt (or to taste)
- ▢ 1 tsp Fresh Thyme (optional)
- ▢ Cracked Black Pepper (to taste)
Remove the base and outer leaves from the cauliflower and wash. Chop into small 0.5 - 1 cm (0.2-0.3 inch) pieces. Don't worry about keeping florets intact
In a large pot, bring ¾ cup (180ml) of water to a boil. Add the cauliflower; bring back to a boil. Cover, reduce the heat to low and steam for 10-15 minutes, or until the cauliflower is very tender.
Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cauliflower to a food processor. Blend until smooth adding some of the cooking liquid if needed (alternatively add baby milk).
If making as a side dish
Add the butter and blend until smooth. Add salt and pepper, adjusting seasoning to suit taste. Add the thyme and process until just combined.
CAULIFLOWER COOKING TIME: The smaller you chop your cauliflower the faster it will cook. Make sure cauliflower is very tender before blending. Keep checking on the cauliflower every few minutes to prevent scorching.
BABY: If making for a baby do not add the extra ingredients (butter and salt) used for making the side dish. You may wish to add a little thyme for flavour.
SIDE DISH: You may wish to cook the cauliflower in chicken stock, instead of water, for extra flavour.
REFRIGERATE: Allow to cool, place in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to two days.
FREEZE: Allow to cool, spoon the puree into ice-cube trays and freeze until solid. Once they’re fully frozen, quickly pop them all out and place the frozen cubes into a freezer bag or container and return to the freezer. Thaw overnight in your refrigerator.

Reasons to Love Cauliflower for Babies- delicious baby food purees – 6+ months
- great for baby-led weaning – 6+ months
- also great for the finger food stage – 9+ months
- full of essential nutrients for baby
- easy stage one and combination puree
- different ways for baby to eat – spoon-fed or self-feed
- easy to make
Typically, white foods don’t have much to offer in the way of vitamins and minerals, but this is not the case with cauliflower. Much like its cousin broccoli, cauliflower has tons of nutrients.
- It provides tons of vitamin C, which is needed for iron absorption and immune support.
- Contains choline, which is essential for your baby’s brain development.
- A good source of fiber to help keep your baby regular.
- High in antioxidants for cancer prevention.
How to Pick Cauliflower
When picking a cauliflower, look for one that is:
- Color: Look for a creamy white color in cauliflower. Avoid those with a dull yellow color or brown spots. The leaves should look fresh and green.
- Texture: You’ll want the heads to be firm to the touch and tightly closed. Avoid heads that are loose or have crumbly florets.
Ingredients Needed
- Cauliflower: you can either use pre-cut florets or cut a head of cauliflower into florets. If you are planning on steaming the cauliflower to make your baby food, you can also use frozen cauliflower.
- Olive Oil or Avocado Oil: feel free to toss the cauliflower with a healthy oil before roasting or before serving as a finger food.
- Spices: you can easily add in a pinch of your favorite seasoning to kick up the flavor.
Adding Spices
In this recipe, we are adding a small drizzle of high-quality olive oil as well as a pinch of paprika, but feel free to use the following spices instead – chopped chives, chopped cilantro, garam masala, cumin, garlic, tandoori, mild curry powder, or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
Tip on Spices: I always recommend adding spices to any baby food as it boosts not only the flavor but also the nutritional benefits, but you can add or leave out spices in all of your baby food. You do you! Either way, this puree will taste amazing.
Frequently Asked Questions
When can you introduce cauliflower to your baby?
Baby can have cauliflower as one of their first foods. When a baby can start on solids is determined by their own rate of development, which generally comes around 6 months of age. Some of the developmental milestones babies need to reach in order to start solids include: if your baby has solid control of their head and neck, if your baby has doubled in weight, and if your baby is reaching for or opening their mouth when you eat (see my guide here). Before you start your baby on purees, you should consult with your pediatrician to make sure your child is developmentally ready.
Is cauliflower a choking hazard?
Yes, raw cauliflower can be a choking hazard since it is hard. Make sure you are serving it in an age-appropriate way, such as cooking it until it is soft and cutting the stalks lengthwise. Always be near and supervise your baby when he is eating cauliflower.
Is cauliflower a common allergen?
No, cauliflower is not a common allergen, however, as with any food, start with a small portion and be aware of any signs that might be an allergic reaction after introducing it.
Does cauliflower cause constipation for babies?
Cauliflower does not typically cause constipation in babies. In fact, it can help alleviate constipation due to its high fiber content.

Baby Feeding Tips
- Cauliflower is in the cruciferous vegetable family, which is known for causing gas. If your baby seems extra gassy since introducing cauliflower, you may want to cut back.
- Avoid boiling cauliflower (and most other veggies), as many of the nutrients leach out into the water and then get tossed down the drain. Other cooking methods like roasting and steaming will leave more nutrients intact.
- For toddlers 18-24 months, you can also start to offer cauliflower that has been cooked slightly less, for a texture with a little more of a bite. This will gradually help your toddler get used to chewing textures of lightly cooked and raw veggies.
- 2 cups cauliflower florets
- pinch seasoning (see notes)
Steam: In a medium saucepan, bring 2″ of water to a boil over medium heat. Place the cauliflower into a steamer basket, cover, and cook for 8-10 minutes or until tender. Reserve steamer water. Let cool slightly.
For Baby Puree: Place the cooked cauliflower into a blender or food processor and add a pinch of dried oregano, or any spice/herb you are using. Turn on the blender or food processor and puree for 1-2 minutes on medium. If the puree is too thick, add 1/4 cup of the reserved liquid at a time, until you achieve desired consistency.
For Baby-Led Weaning: serve to your baby in an age-appropriate way – either in bigger florets or chopped into smaller pieces. You can also puree or mash the cauliflower and serve to your baby on a self-feeding spoon.
Age: 6+ months
Storage: you can store the cauliflower puree in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 4 months. You can store the cauliflower pieces in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Spices/Herbs: Adding spices to your baby’s foods is a great way to introduce more complex flavors at an early age. Some great spices and herbs to add to cooked cauliflower are a pinch of mild curry, garlic powder, and cumin or you can add in a pinch of chopped fresh parsley, chives, mint, and cilantro.

Cauliflower puree for babies recipe
Young mothers always worry when it comes to introducing a baby to a new food product. The main fear is not knowing what puree to cook for the first feeding. At the same time, the first dish of the baby should be not only tasty, but also as useful as possible. Therefore, pediatricians often recommend boiling cauliflower as the first adult food for a child. But from what age is a child allowed to give this product? How much to cook mashed cauliflower for babies? We will analyze the recipe for the best complementary foods and the beneficial properties of this vegetable together today.
What are the health benefits of cauliflower?
Vegetables in the infant's diet should form the main part of the diet. And since cauliflower is a storehouse of useful vitamins and minerals, it is necessary to cook it and include it in the children's diet.
Content of useful components:
- proteins;
- dietary fiber;
- calcium, sodium, iron, copper, potassium and phosphorus;
- vitamins of group B, as well as A, U, E, PP, D, K, C;
- citric, folic, tartronic, malic and Omega-3 acids;
- biotin;
- fiber;
- starch;
- and in the content of ascorbic acid it surpasses even the white-headed vegetable.
The benefits of the rich vitamin composition are as follows:
- Complementary food from cauliflower has a beneficial effect on the digestion of crumbs, promotes the development of beneficial microflora in the intestines, and restores the mucous membrane.
- This useful vegetable helps to eliminate toxins from a small body, improves intestinal motility.
- Complementary food from cauliflower helps to strengthen blood vessels and improves the functioning of the heart system.
- Contributes to the normal development of the nervous system of the baby.
- Due to its iron content, cauliflower is a good prevention of iron deficiency.
- Cabbage food is an excellent prevention of cancer and inflammation.
- Strengthens the immune system.
- Promotes cell regeneration.
Like broccoli, cauliflower is easily digested by the baby's body, does not provoke colic, bloating and flatulence. The baby after cabbage feeding remains calm, cheerful, full. Allergic reactions from cauliflower are rare. Therefore, it is quite safe to include this vegetable in the children's diet. But still, it is worth considering some of the negative aspects of cauliflower.
What harm?
If it is reasonable to approach the introduction of the first complementary foods for babies, cauliflower inflorescences will not harm the child. But if the baby daily consumes this vegetable, and even in large quantities, then the following reactions may appear:
- severe allergies in the form of itchy rashes, redness;
- heartburn from hyperacidity of gastric juice;
- thyroid enlargement;
- inflammatory processes in the intestines;
- impaired renal function.
The first rule of complementary foods for a baby is not to overdo it. It is worth remembering this, no matter what safe product you introduce into the children's diet.
How and when to introduce cauliflower into the baby's diet?
Cabbage complementary foods can be introduced as early as 4 months of age for artificial babies and from six months for children who are breastfed. Cauliflower puree is easily absorbed by the baby's body, which cannot be said about white cabbage.
Cooking cauliflower puree is most useful for children who have frequent constipation and anemia. If the baby is faced with the problem of weight gain, acquaintance with cauliflower should be postponed until later, when the child is already familiar with cereals - from about 7 months you can return to this vegetable.
The first puree of cauliflower is given in the amount of ½ teaspoon. A day later, the volume of the portion is increased by 2 times. However, all this time it is necessary to observe whether an undesirable reaction of the child's body to the "curly" vegetable has appeared. If the benefits of cauliflower are obvious, you can continue to increase the serving of complementary foods to the recommended amount:
- age 6 months - 100 g;
- 7 months old - 150 g;
- 8 months old - 180 g;
- age 9-12 months - 200
A few drops of olive oil can be added to baby cauliflower puree. But this should be done 2 weeks after the first acquaintance of the baby with the vegetable. If, after cabbage feeding, the baby feels discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract, this vegetable should be discarded. In this case, you can try to cook crumbs of broccoli.
Delicious baby cauliflower puree recipe
Cauliflower cooks quite quickly. However, before you start cooking a vegetable, it must be soaked in cold, previously boiled water for 3-4 hours. So you get rid of possible nitrates that unscrupulous farmers fertilized the plant.
For the simplest baby puree, you will need 50 g of cauliflower and 2-3 tablespoons of water, formula or breast milk. Having disassembled the vegetable into inflorescences, it must be thoroughly washed. Dip the flowers in water that has boiled. How long will it take to cook cauliflower for babies? A maximum of 20 minutes until the vegetable is soft, but it should not turn into porridge. Then put the inflorescences in a bowl and beat with a blender to a state of a monotonous slurry. Be sure to dilute the puree with breast milk, infant formula, or water.
Cauliflower is boiled in a double boiler as follows: water is poured onto the lower tier, and vegetable inflorescences are laid on the upper tier. Boil cabbage in this way for up to 15 minutes, after which the cabbage is turned into a puree state, diluted with water or mother's milk. Such a dish retains nutrients to the maximum.
In the microwave, cauliflower is prepared as follows: the inflorescences are placed in a glass dish, poured with boiled water, covered with cling film and cooked for 5-7 minutes at full power of the device. Next, mashed potatoes are prepared by analogy with previous recipes.
The recipe for a simple cauliflower puree can later be supplemented with an egg (in particular, the yolk), butter, broccoli, potatoes, zucchini and other vegetables. Adding salt to baby food is not recommended. But a couple of drops of vegetable oil (especially olive) does not hurt at all.
Cauliflower is good for the child's body. Do not be afraid to feed your baby with it - with this vegetable, he will receive a lot of useful vitamins and microelements. However, do not forget that you need to choose a vegetable and cook it correctly, otherwise, instead of benefiting, you will harm your baby. And remember that baby food should be fresh, so always try to prepare a small but fresh batch of mashed potatoes.

Selection and preparation of cauliflower
Puree can be made from fresh or frozen cabbage. Preference is undoubtedly given to the first option. This issue is not discussed at all if the dish is prepared for the baby.
Consider the rules for choosing a head of cauliflower:
- the head must be dense and resilient;
- inflorescences should be located as close as possible to each other and have a light beige color;
- The green leaf mass must fit snugly around the head;
- any discoloration or damage is unacceptable.
Initially, the head of cabbage is disassembled into large inflorescences and washed under running water.
If mashed potatoes are prepared for babies, then large shoots must be additionally soaked in saline. To do this, dilute 2 tablespoons of sea or table salt in a liter of water. After dissolving the crystals, cabbage is lowered into the liquid for half an hour. This manipulation allows you to get rid of small insects that may have chosen a vegetable.
After soaking, large shoots are rinsed again and disassembled into small inflorescences. It's time to start processing vegetables.
Ways to boil cabbage for puree
There are several ways to boil cauliflower until soft. Let's analyze each of them in detail:
- On the stove. Processed inflorescences are placed in boiling water and boiled for 15 - 20 minutes on medium heat. It is better to keep the lid tightly closed so that water-soluble vitamins do not evaporate.
- In a slow cooker. Cauliflower can be cooked on the "Extinguishing" mode by adding a small amount of water to the bowl. In this case, the cabbage processing time is 15 minutes. The multicooker lid must be closed. Another option is to use the "Steam" function and boil the vegetable in a special bowl for 20 minutes after the liquid boils.
- In a steamer. If you prefer to use a double boiler, then you also need to cook cauliflower inflorescences in it for 20 minutes.
- In the microwave. The inflorescences are placed in a container suitable for use in microwave ovens and water is added. For 1 kilogram of cauliflower, you need 100 grams of liquid. The top of the cup is loosely covered with a lid or plastic bag. Cook the vegetable at maximum power for 5 minutes. After the specified time, check the readiness of the cabbage. You can do this with a kitchen knife or fork. If the tools do not penetrate well inside, then continue cooking in the same mode for another 3 minutes.
- In the oven. Cabbage is placed in a small baking sheet and, almost completely, is filled with water. Prepare the inflorescences in the oven for 25 minutes. The heating temperature should be 180 - 200 degrees.
Classic recipe for cauliflower puree
- cabbage – 1 head, total weight about 1 kilogram;
- butter - 50 grams;
- water or cabbage broth - 200 milliliters;
- salt - 1 teaspoon.
Prepared cabbage is thermally processed until soft by any of the above methods. Fold half of the softened pieces into a blender bowl, add 100 milliliters of water and punch everything together until a homogeneous consistency. Then the second parts of the products, salt and oil are added. The procedure is repeated. Ready mashed cauliflower can be peppered with freshly ground pepper to taste.

- no spices need to be added to the dish;
- the consistency of baby puree should be the same as kefir;
- puree can be diluted with pure water, cabbage broth or breast milk;
- olive oil is used, direct extraction.
