The choice of household chemicals can hardly be called an exciting activity. But there is something worse: to buy a battery of meaningless and unsafe funds. We have chosen several Russian brands that promise to clean and wash everything without harming people and nature.

General rules

If the effectiveness of household chemicals can be tested empirically - washed or not, then what about safety? In addition to individual reactions, from which no one is immune, the use of certain cleaning products can be harmful to health: cause chemical burns, irritation of the skin or mucous membranes, and difficulty breathing. To avoid this, you can try to avoid components that are considered unsafe.

Household chemicals must not contain phthalates, phosphates, ionic surfactants, chlorine, ammonia, petroleum solvents, formaldehyde, butyl glycol, ethylene glycol, volatile organic compounds, and artificial colors and flavors [1]. Ideally, these components should not be present at all, but, for example, in the case of phosphates, the content of the substance is less than 5%.

Pay attention to the labeling [3], [4] and not to the words "bio", "eco", "natural" on the packaging.

How to use household chemicals correctly and safely

Follow the instructions carefully: do not use too much concentrated product, do not strive to achieve abundant foam - this is not an indicator of effectiveness.

Please note the manufacturer's warnings: some products should only be used in a well-ventilated area, while wearing gloves and other protective equipment.

Impact on the planet

Many include soda and natural soap [10]; if the product contains surfactants, their concentration is indicated. Many organic products contain ingredients that have long been known: vinegar, salt, citric acid and soda. Even 20 years ago, soda was in every apartment on a shelf near the sink. She rubbed off complex stains and brought shine, when they didn’t even dream of products smelling of bamboo and currants.

Soda can be used to clean a mattress, carpet or upholstered furniture [14]. It will help to get rid of an unpleasant smell in the refrigerator [15] - for this you need to wash the walls with a solution of soda. Soda applied to a damp sponge removes dark deposits from tea and coffee on cups and other utensils. If you add baking soda to dishwashing detergent, this mixture will replace the cream for cleaning the kitchen backsplash and oven. A little baking soda can be added to laundry detergent to remove stains from clothes. You can even make an air freshener out of it [16]: to do this, just pour soda into a jar, add your favorite essential oil and cover the jar with paper, securing it with tape or an elastic band.
