I had the opportunity to help throw a woodland themed shower (click on the link for more details!) for a friend expecting her first little boy. You can read about all the activities and decor in the link above. I did help with a lot of the decorating but I can’t take any credit for the adorable woodland themed food table… it was all my friend Caden!

She arranged and displayed everything handsomely. The touches of woodsy shrubbery and little forest friends, the treats/food she chose, all the way down to the food labels and banner she made, I loved every single aspect of it! So dang cute! 

Those baby moccasins are so tiny and adorable! 

Let’s just start off by saying you can go CRAZY with food ideas for a woodland themed party! There are just so many possibilities and your imagination is the only limit! 

We served a variety of creative, delicious munchies that were spot on with our theme. It helped that the baby shower was in between breakfast and lunch so there wasn’t a need for a set menu but rather a few sweet and savory goodies.  

HEDGEHOG

Can we please stop and talk about how cute this cheeseball hedgehog is?! I mean, how adorable is he!

And not too complicated to make either. Any cheeseball recipe will do then form the cheese ball into an oval with a point. Top with a few pecans and walnuts (halved almonds work too!), and finish him off with three raisins for the eyes and mouth.

So darling! It was such a pity the poor thing lost it’s head rather quickly and most of it’s body because it was so delicious! 

TWIGS

People will definitely be snapping a twig or two while walking in this forest, especially if they have chocolate in them! Pirouline Wafers were used for the “twigs“.

ACORNS

These “acorns” are merely Hershey Kisses and Mini Nutter Butters with a tad bit of chocolate frosting to stick them together. Super easy to assemble and so on point with the forest theme! 

TRAIL MIX

What better thing to munch on while walking in the forest than trail mix! Buy a prepared mix or make your own by combining any of the following: raisins, variety of nuts (like almonds, cashews, peanuts), m&ms, dried fruit (cranberries, apricots, coconut), pretzels, seeds, chocolate covered nuts/candies, marshmallows, and anything else you are hankering for!

You can always add a few ‘bears’ (teddy grahams or gummy bears) and ‘twigs’ (pretzel sticks) to create the perfect woodland trail mix!

MOOSE MUNCH

Slap a label to some popcorn (this is my favorite!)- BAM, “moose munch“. I’m not exactly sure what moose eat… but popcorn is always good right?

FOREST BERRIES

It’s always a treat when you find some tasty forest berries! The colorful array of blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries was definitely a fan favorite.   

DEER DROPPINGS

Chocolate covered candies in a dish aren’t all that impressive. But create a fancy sign for them and label it “deer droppings” and you have taken that chocolate to a whole new level of fun!

CUPCAKES

Every party needs a treat and these fruit topped cupcakes were just the thing to satisfy every sweet tooth! The cupcakes were displayed on a wicker basket which brought some great texture to the table and it also added a fun picnic feel. 

WOODLAND INSPIRED CAKE

And always the crowning piece, the cake!

If you are not a cake decorator, this is right down your alley! All it is is a white box cake with white frosting with that “naked cake” feel. Then dressed up with a bit of moss, acorns, and pinecones and displayed on a wood slice cake stand (which is just a thick wood slice she place on top of a white cake stand). Super simple and yet absolutely perfect! 

It is actually the same type of cake she made for the Floral Baby Shower. I love how versatile it is!

DRINKS

Water was dressed up with these fox water bottle labels. Originally we had all discussed serving “pond juice” to go with the theme. You may have seen “pond juice” floating around on Pinterest if you have been searching through woodland parties. It’s just a light green punch. 

Anyways when going over details, I asked Caden if she wanted to use my drink dispenser. She said no because she was just serving water. She added that she didn’t want any “pond juice” spilt on her floors. I don’t say I blame her! 

And just a helpful hint with the water bottle labels, since I did print the labels on paper, there is the risk of them getting wet and then peeling off. So I used scotch tape to go around the label. Result? Waterproofed labels. 🙂

The first three disappointments

I am not a professional supply manager-practitioner, the diet on this trip is my personal whim. On the other hand, a gastronomic journalist is not ashamed to ask for help. Several chefs I know gave me not only their recipes, but also a huge bag of different ingredients. Perhaps that is why I had to pay for excess baggage at the airport, the backpack, along with food and ammunition, weighed more than 25 kilograms. Pleased only with the realization of the fact that my burden will lose weight every day. nine0003

Initially, I decided to buy most of the products in Gorno-Altaysk, and bring rare ingredients from Moscow, such as chimichurri walnut sauce or basmati rice. In practice, it turned out that Altai stores offer a very meager assortment of fairly popular products. For example, it’s damn hard to find cilantro there, and the vegetables in the largest supermarket in the city turned out to be rotten. I had to arrange an additional marathon in local shops and markets in order to somehow complete my food basket. nine0286 Do not repeat my mistake: do not shop on the last day before the trip!

Shrink in volume! Some foods can be stored together. For example, olive oil will help you preserve feta. Carefully choose containers for transportation, during the flight I broke a package with sriracha sauce, I had to wash things on the first day. Vacuum bags are guaranteed not to break. Another find is a tube of baby puree, inside you can store liquids and bulk products. nine0003

Food set logic

Personal diet is a matter of care and responsibility, so the food set should be as varied and balanced as possible. Include all kinds of nutrients in the list - proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fiber. Pay attention first of all to products that are stored for a long time or that are already canned.

Canned fish can be added to salads, made into soups or just eaten. Economically, this is more profitable than buying canned meat of dubious quality. If you still decide on stew, buy one jar to try. Inside should not be modest meat threads, but large dense pieces with a minimum amount of transparent fat. Vacuum-cured meat is a finished product that won't go bad unless you foolishly leave it out in the sun for a long time. Canned legumes are not inferior in nutrition to canned meat and fish, for example, chickpeas and beans are good. nine0003

Do not be a zealous fan of buckwheat, take other cereals with you: rice, bulgur, couscous.

Instead of bulky pasta, I prefer ptitim pearls, there will be more space in the backpack.

Fruits of long shelf life - a sponsor of children's joy at rest. I hate peeling oranges at home, but we love camping. Do not limit yourself to dried fruits only prunes and dried apricots, try other dried fruits - mango, pear, banana, peach, persimmon, kiwi, pineapple, etc. A handful of nuts eaten in time will save you from a hungry swoon on the track. Remember, cashew consumption is always higher, almonds and hazelnuts can be stretched longer. nine0003

Bread is the head of everything and in the campaign. Many people prefer to take bread, but they can crumble in a couple of days of intensive walking. Artisan bread will not spoil even after a couple of weeks: it's all about the leaven from which it is made. Even if the bread dries out, it can be easily revived by roasting it on a fire or a gas burner. This will only make it tastier!

Parmesan crumble is almost a universal seasoning for everything. Cheese can be used to slightly thicken dishes that are too liquid if you make a mistake in proportions with water, for example, in unsweetened cereals. nine0287 The more spices you take, the more interesting and varied your lunch and dinner will be. I don't see anything wrong with using fenugreek or pink pepper when camping. Others will twist their finger at the temple exactly until they try something from your bowl.

The laziest breakfast cereal bars

I don't consider myself an owl or a lark, but on a hike I save every extra minute of sleep. Therefore, I prefer to have breakfast quickly and nutritiously. The first breakfast option is cereal bars. I cooked them back in Moscow so as not to fuss around the burner in the morning - I unwrapped them and ate them. It's like porridge, but in the form of a bar. How do you make aioli on the go? No way! I haven't figured out a way to get the eggs safely. And even if they do not break, they can easily deteriorate. Therefore, I decided to make almost aioli - add finely chopped garlic to good mayonnaise and dilute it with tuna juice from a can to the desired consistency. It turned out almost perfect. I'm sure if you use tender Japanese mayonnaise, you will get an excellent aioli. nine0003

I had almost no greenery with me, so I decided to add pasture. The first rule in the forest: if you don't know what kind of plant it is, don't eat or even pluck it! But it is possible to make a decent imitation. All ramen have a complex broth that is cooked for more than 10 hours. It is impossible to cook the broth faster, we have to deceive our receptors. To do this, it is important to find several sources of fat. I had: different types of vegetable oils, stewed fat (not protein, but transparent aspic with a minimum amount of meat), boiled smoked meat in a vacuum (remarkably stored in field conditions), meat meal (dehydrated meat ground into dust), dry mushrooms. Luckily, I also had kaishi - “liquid spices” based on soy sauce, miso, kombu seaweed and shiitake mushrooms. nine0003

The debate can be endless, but my personal observations: due to the greater amount of fiber in the diet of vegetarians, they feel hunger much later. And also, probably due to the peculiarities of nutrition, their appetite is slightly lower.
